Mecer have a USB modem which is ideal
for standalone or small home network,
where router is not essential.

Set-up a small home network with ICS
on XP to W2000 / W98 / XP -
works like a dream (except of course the
major hassles of CAP and port prioritization)

Also recently experienced disconnects and also
some authentication errors - but I have assumed these
to be due to Telkom probs because mostly the connection
stays for up to 24hrs

Ive got a Netgear dg814 gateway, its a pretty good product, no problems with the latest firmware update. My only problem is that it doesnt support pppoe from ur OS to telkom so it doesnt work that well with a freebsd server.

But if anyone wants to trade their telkom pots router or the usb one for this one, please give me mail [email protected]

Its still in perfect condition(not a scratch) if you were wondering.

I've been using a Cisco 827H router with Cisco IP and Firewall IOS since the start of the commercial service. I haven't had any problems and setup was quick and easy.

It effectively involves "hacking" the modem, by logging in via an engineering backdoor and changing advanced values. One wrong move and you'll have to send it back and pay to have it replaced (you'll be voiding your warranty).

For less than R500 now, I thought this was a bargain, but after installing it I'm in doubt. I keep on receiving a message that indicates "ADSL Signal Lost" from the modem. This sometimes happens every 15 minutes - although I had times where it stayed up for longer than 24 hours.

Interesting is that the software driver for this modem is from Alcatel.

Perhaps someone can share some light on the reason why the ADSL signal gets lost.

How many WAN ports does the Netgear DG814 have?

In other words, does it only allow you to have the ADSL connection as the input to your WAN or does it have an additional ethernet port as input. Only asking in case I change to let's say ISDN, can I still use the router part? Or must I rather buy the DM604 and a separate router?

It has four 10/100 LAN ports so you could use it as an expensive hub, but it's purpose is to serve as a DSL gateway.

If you have the resources to do so, Pinnacle Micro have 2 ADSL modems, namely:
D-Link DSL-300G (in stock)
D-Link DSL-504G (no stock)

anyone know what these modems are like ?

This is the 2nd day now of testing the D-Link DSL-504G and
while the setup was quite easy - I have 1 major problem.

The link drops from every 10 mins to every hour - I suspect this
might not be the router fault. Also most times when a second pc
connects the link drops.

The above test is on an adsl line that is fine (by telkom's standard) on a usb to PC modem with ICS.

Does anyone have an adsl router that does not lose its link more
than 3 times in a busy working day ??[?]

I just ordered the Netgear DG 834... the newer model to the 814, got better wirewall support and ironically is 7 pounds cheaper. My boet will bring it back... 90 pounds / R 1080.00 with local shipping too. http://www.netgear.com/products/prod_details.asp?prodID=222&view=

Will give feedback in a month or two when I get this all up, thought all would like to know of update anyway.

This is a really good modem / router. I ripped out a telkom USB modem yesterday at a client cos of port TCP port conflicts (I think)

Availble from Gazaz (Genex) in Cape Town, prices below are dealer cost ex vat. If you are CT based I will order it for you but you must pay cash notes on collection. Anyone else, I will courier to you for a small fee...

Fusion.01, do you have an update regarding DG834 performance (as you promised)? I am setting up an office in Belville and will bring a DG834 with me from the USA - the "myadsl" forum is indeed a wonderful source of information about ADLS use in South Africa but I cannot help but be apprehensive about the quality of the service (including customer service) I will be getting from Telkom. So any feedback from you (or anybody else) about the successful implementation/use of the DG834 will be sincerely appreciated.

i,ve been using a SMC 7401BRA ADSL router that i got from Sahara ...its not bad ,i did a firmware upgrade and it works like a charm

....

sahara also have SMC USB ADSL modems and SMC PCI ones....

Am also using an SMC7401BRA (connected to local switch.) Have had the following problems with it : none. Links are good, modem has good features. Bought it, as a dealer, from MaxTech in JHB. I would recommend it. Also has USB connectivity if I ever need it. [

Howzit guys!

I just got back from a trip to Germany recently where a good friend of mine gave me a Siemens SE515 Wireless DSL router (http://www.siemens-mobile.com/cds/frontdoor/0,2241,hq_en_0_42931_rArNrNrNrN,00.html) including a Siemens Wireless Network adapter for some WiFi action.

Well, I already own a FritzDSL ISDN/DSL combo card and I'm actually running my internet through a WISP, so I don't have a use for this router. Naturally then that I'm willing to sell the whole package for R1000.

So for a R1000 you basically aquire a Siemens 4-port router that has a built-in ADSL modem and includes a WLAN access point with up to 54 Mbits/s speed. And for kicks you'll also receive that WLAN USB adapter. That's roughly R500 less than most DSL routers I've seen around in SA. Everything is still in its retail packaging and works just fine.
