Hi All,

I'm thinking of getting ADSL 384, but when it comes to modems, who should I get it from, telkom or go to a pc shop? Thanx all :p

Stay away from Telkom.

They are overpriced and outdated.

The only claim to fame is that if you use their equipment, they can't tell you is your equipment that's faulty!!

Search the forums for info on modems!! Alot has been said.

I'd say the 2 favourites are Billion and NetGear.

Also:

What is your setup like?

Network? single PC?

Because that also determines what type of modem you should get.

ie. Router/modem

You can also consider going for a wireless router/modem.

G'luck!!

:)

Hey louisp

Thanx :P Single PC hey. Have you heard anything on an external usb modem called Dynalink?

Billion from Online Shops

Dont do the Telkom modem. Overpriced.

Go to jump.co.za or digitalplanet.co.za.

Good prices and quick delivery.

Cheers.

Modem you plug into you PC only and of you go. Very similar to normal 56 analog Modem.
Router/Modem usually plugs into you network and you PC connect to it via a network port. You can use the network port direct to you PC Network card (for 1 PC), or with a switch/hub if you have many PCs on the network.

Most Routers also have extra features that "hide" your network from the internet.

I can get you a Planet Modem Router for R620 (ADE-3100) for comparison.

I have a maraconi (sp?) ADSL USB Pots modem from when I cancelled my ADSL line.. Anyone want it?, make an offer :)

I'll give you R10 ... will be used as target practice for my Glock ;).

A truly modern lad eh?, plastic modem, plastic pistol. Tell me, is Michael Jackson around? That would complete the triangle using 3 different plastic types :)

Personally the value of the round, 9mm, 10mm or .40 outweighs that of a 'Telkom internet device', but you can't blame a guy for trying!

Billion and NetGear are most popular in SA

Billion and NetGear have been approved by most of SA users, strong adaptability for Telkom line, stable, easy to set up and wide range functionality you can opt to suit your need, excellent technical support (regular firmware update, very important for this kind equipment)

Have a look at http://soholink.co.za

This second one says its a modem/router combo, whats the story with a modems and routers, u need both obviously?

A router/modem combo is really recommended as it allows for maximum flexibility in future when connecting additional PC's to your ADSL connection.

A modem is simply a device that allows your PC to connect to the ADSL network via the telephone jack using either an Ethernet or USB cable to connect it to your PC.

A router is a device (PC with some software or some special hardware) that does routing i.e it can intelligently send TCP/IP packets across different networks.

Some even have firewall and NAT capabilities which further secures your connection.

Cisco 827/837 or 1700 with ADSL wic - depends on your requirements.

How much would an 827 cost if you bought it from a reseller ???.

scheez. no idea dude. but i can find out for you if you want?
they are excellent adsl routers - especially if you want to use the vpn capabilities built in. forward proxies/VPNs etc etc are a breeze to setup, and save you the shlep of have to configure it all on your desktop when your cap runs out :D you do need a functional understanding of cisco ios though - it doesnt have all the nice "easy" configuration stuff that the linksys (also by cisco) kit has.

Yeah ... would be very keen to know the price of one of them as compared to the home gear.
