Hi guys,

I am about to order my ADSL and I wonder what the situation with the modems is.

Can somebody post a link with the specifications of the modems/routers that Telkom offers as I can't find any so far?

As far as I understand one can buy the modem separately, any suggestions what works and what is the best and most cost effective? I use Linux for my gateway so whatever I buy must work fine under Linux.

I found that www.cyberdyne.co.za offers USB modems for R290 ex vat. I am not sure if those work under Linux. Here is a link: http://www.aceex.com.tw/test1/product/adslusb9.htm

thanks

thanks tibby.dude

yes, I suspect that the usb modems are crap

can you recommend some ethernet modem that I can get hold of?

have a look at the D-Link DSL-300T. it is a Ethernet modem so works perfectly with Linux (pppoe) and it is very cheap +/- R400

Well I'm also looking at getting a new modem, Not that i'm having any problems with mine but I'm sick of telkom telling me my modem is at fault and having to spend 4 days proving it is not.

I am trying to get the 2700HGV from 2WIRE but that is is becoming a mission and a half as they only supply it through ISP's

My reason for wanting that modem is due to the sytem logs and line Diagnostics that the modem has, so when I have problems with my line I can tell telkom where the problem is before they give me any problems. The built in firewall, and the VOIP options.

Since I cant seem to get that modem, of the modems suggested above with wireless (and the billion if anyone has it) which have the best diagnostic software loaded or stat logs? Could any of you post those or suggest a modem that comes close to the 2wire?

Would be great to find out... thanks

I Have the Planet ADE3100A Modem/Router. It also has a Diagnostics page. Very nice. Cost R650.

Thats the modem I'm currently using :) . Unfortunatly it does not give as much data as the 2wire.

It also only uses NAT, which is why I'm also looking at a better firewall system other than my normal software firewalls on my PC

Does anyone know?

I hadn't :) But I have now thanks and also updated the firmware. Still need to get a wireless modem though

I did also however get hold of 2Wire Yesterday and they where very helpful and directed me to CDW in order to get the modem shipped to me here in SA. I have one or two more questions for them which I have submitted, but of course finding a local modem is still the best option.

However and I'm gonna be Blunt, Everyone on the forums has been pushing modems and saying HEY this one is brillent, etc.... Is that due to the fact that you have it and it works (which well Most modems work well if you know what to do and how to configure them right).

Does no body know any technical information about the modems or know of the firewall options, and diagnostic tests etc? That would really help alot of us, or at least me anyway, or have any suggestings that work like Louisvdw?

I know what you are talking about. I was also thinking about a review site for PC Hardware for SA. You know, one that reviews the products we have available is SA (Most of them has rusian or French international reviews only, or are unique to SA (like Duxbury)).
Is that what you are thinking about Kalvaer?

Pretty much :) I mean on this thread alone 8 people gave good views to certain modems? Yet none can reply about the technical stats? There are not may Sites in SA that do give many stats or any of the options that are available.

I can speak and read Russian, even if not very well so even a russian site would be great for me :), but alas none can be found.

Seems nobody knows anything other than "it works" but I really would like more input

Что я могу сделать?
