ADSL modems

I'm running the Billion 5102 4 port switch router... A breeze to set up, a beauty to run... Also has a pretty decent diagnostics page...

I know what you are talking about. I was also thinking about a review site for PC Hardware for SA.
Is that what you are thinking about Kalvaer?
Can we not start a thread.section here? In am sure there are many different modems being used by our members. How bout writing a small review, with technical details, some pics, setup etc. Sure this could help new ADSL users. Will be writing a review (with pics. :D ) as soon as I get my modem/router.

What do you guys and girls think about the idea?

A review section is an excellent idea, and, as mentioned, for products available locally. I'm sick of going to tomshardware.com etc. and checking out stuff we dont get here, or have to order from abroad.
How about it RPM?

I second a review section. Added to this should be contact details of places where one can purchase the products (only places where the average Joe can buy from, not dealers).

Brillent idea :)

I've got 2 Planet modems, the one is the ADE 3100 (same as Louisvdw) and another planet as well. I'll leave th ADE 3100 to you Louisvdw if ya want and and i'll check what the other one is I got at home and do that one this weekend

USB modems have the added benefit of NO FRICKING STUPID 2 PIN POWER PLUG and bulky fire hazard 12V FRICKING adapter ready to fall out lying all over the place...

Though, they are a bit harder to set up. Under Linux.

So wheres this SA review site?
I'll contribute all day, everyday. Our distrubutors SUCK with informing their dealers. Rectron, Sahara, Axiz, Genex, Esquire, could you get any more FRICKIN pathetic.

And half their hardware is crap.

the new telkom 4-port routers are manufactured by BILLION and what can i say, they rock :)

no more marconi...

considering the SNO may not be around in the next two years, it's quite an advantage signing the 24 month contract deal with the devil and getting the free billion. but that's my opinion and i don't pay for my adsl :D

i still hate telkom, though.

Yeah the netgear does have heating problems, mines used to go off every 3 hours, had to disconnect it, let it cool off and connect it again.
Try contacting netgear support or duxbury SA, u will get a reply after few weeks.
and the reply will state, press the reset button at the back of the router. :D
so if you want good support if you going to have any problems, i wudnt recommend a Netgear product, if you want good wireless dont get a netgear, if you want a stable internet connection dont get the netgear DG834GT, but i've heard that the DG834 dont give problems, but ya never would i personally buy a netgear product again.
they worse then hellkom! :D

I have one of the older netgear DG814 series....like the DG834 but not wireless. I used it for 1 & 1/2 years in the uk without any problems what so ever, and continue to use it now as a switch with my iburst.

N.E.T.G.E.A.R and you wont be sorry, I have a DG834 and it never missed a beat, good software to for easy configs and port forwarding for games and stuff. If I can understand it anyone can hehehe

I have always been happy with Netgear, but have been having probs with my DG632 - according to their forum, Im not alone... problem is that netgear are doing NOTHING about it. Main prob is DNS routing...

I have been told about a unit that has both ethernet and tel. jacks. U connect regular phone and have choice of 3 VoIP providers - just dial 1-3 and number to make VoIP calls, am off 2 supplier to check it out, will post results...

I can't believe I'm reading this... Anyone who signs a contract with t31k0m have rocks in their head...

Buy the modem - 2 yrs is a long time. No bargains from Telkom... Do the math... R700 for ADSL modem/router, + regular ADSL subs = ?

I think the 2 yr contract = free router which seems fine if you consider using adsl for 2 yrs. Only reason i did not go for it was that i am not sure how log i will keep my adsl connection and dlink router looks sweet.

EdRobinson, maybe you should read over what you quoted again. waht i said is totally opinionated (i even said so), and also remember i don't pay for my ADSL - if i did i wouldn't have signed the contract obviously..

have a nice day :D

2Wire Firmware

The 2Wire Firmware is essentially the same on all models for the past 8 months. A 1800HG, 1701HG, 1000HG and all 2000 and 3000 series models come with the same diagnostic routines. The information provided is very robust. Older models can be upgraded to display a lot, but sometimes not all, of the same information. Ebay is a great place to find Homeportals. I use a 1000HG (only one ethernet port instead of four) since I connect all my machines wirelessly and the 1000HG is cheaper.

Could any of you post those or suggest a modem that comes close to the 2wire?

2wire is an OEM supplier to US phone companies for DSL.

I don't think it is a bright idea to buy one for use locally as you are going to be sitting with a very expensive brick if the firmware cannot sync with the DSLAM's that Telkom use.

Rather buy something that has been tested and approved by ICASA like Billion, Netgear or DLink.

Agreed, the last thing you want is Telkom throwing a hissy and cutting you off because you're using unapproved hardware.

The other thing is, now with the self install option, why at all buy the Telkom modem / get into a 24 month contract? The R404 you would have spent can now be invested in a decent piece of kit.
