Hi All

What are the better ADSL modems out there.

I am still using a Telkom MEGAWAR 100 modem.

Regards
Ryan

I would like to know as well. I have been given R1200 for a new ADSL modem/router (must have 4 x 1gig ports). Has anyone got some advice on what to potentially purchase or start looking at. Have seen the Linksys x3000.

The mega 100 is a dog
I have been using netgear 384 and now the 2200 and they are rock solid
That said if the modem /router is for more complex functions especially with micro servers etc , i suggest a more flexible modem with much more functions .

Look, if you don't have any issues with that modem, don't even bother with a newer one.
I'm still using a Telkom 5100 ADSL modem, which predates your Telkom Mega WR100, and mine is rock solid.

If you want to get an ADSL modem that inc a decent WiFi AP, then look at the TP-Link W8960N or W8961N or D-Link DSL-2750U. All 3 of them are in the order of R500-R600.

I myself have he W8960N and it's an awesome router for the price. Have not had a single problem with it. I would highly suggest the TP-Link Range.

But as Pada said, if you don't have any issues with the one you are currently using, then don't change. No point really.

I'm with Pada on this; also the majority of "intermittent" & performance related ADSL faults I've seen have been Telkom/POTS filter/non-Telkom cabling problems, a new modem/router seldom resolves the underlying problem.

Sigh ... seems like many of us are looking for new ADSL modem/router , I myself am looking for one as well but
must be netgear ... just love them to bits any idea where i can get some netgear ... gear?

Netgear n600?

That is what I am looking at at the moment. the range on my telkom Mega 105WR is terrible. hopefully the netgear will sort that out. thats all I really need anyway.

either that or an ADSL modem with an apple airport Extreme as my wifi AP.

What's MyBB's opinion?

Unfortunately the billion I have, the network ports are starting to give problems. The ADSL works fine.

I think you've confused threads here Matt. With respect to the above; it looks OK but I'd go with the D-Link DSL-2500U modem solely because I've installed a lot with only one failure which was swapped out by the supplier without problems.

:) thanks. So replace the TP-link with the D-link. The setup I quoted should be okay you say. There isn't a step I've left out?

It looks fine to me. I haven't personally set up a Mikrotik but you'll find plenty of help here. IIRC Pada knows them pretty well :)

Great Thanks. Yeah the Mikrotik was slightly complicated in the beginning but once you know where things are it gets easier...profound I know :p

MikroTik routers are awesome. I'm running MikroTik RouterOS (licensed to level 4) in a VM on my HP Microserver N36L and it works beautifully.
All our routers at the office are MikroTik RouterBoards (either RB1100/1200). We even replaced some Cisco routers with MikroTik's because the Cisco hardware was too unstable.

I have to admit that MikroTik routers lack native Dynamic DNS updating, and that they have very poor OpenVPN and IPSec support. For this reason we started off with OpenVPN servers on Fedora and now moved over to Cisco hardware and IPSec VPN's.

I can't really recommend D-Link over TP-Link or other way round. D-Link's firmware upgrades is the one big thing that I have against them, because you can accidentally flash it with a different modem's firmware and end up with a bricked router.
One thing that I can tell you, is that you should avoid the TP-Link ADSL modems that has model numbers ending with a 'T'. (eg. TP-LINK TD-8840T), because they use a Trendnet ADSL chipset and not a Broadcom one.
In South AFrica, the Broadcom ADSL chipsets work much better.
