Hey guys need some of your help regarding 1st time adsl

We do have a fixed line for a great number of years and would like to know the following

Do I pay anything to get adsl connected? Looking at getting a 2mb line uncapped...

What is all needed for self installation? Modem and filter?

What modem do I go for? Mainly for online gaming, youtube, browsing and torrents (happy with +-100kbps, if I’ll get that on torrents, will be great if I get more/higher speeds on torrents)

I currently have a MTN Uncapped Lite package, which was discontinued, and runs until March and looking at giving adsl a go. I won’t be looking at capped packages cos I’m too used to uncapped even as slow as it gets after 3gb cap but nonetheless I’m always connected.

Your help will be greatly appreciated as I’m a total noob to adsl

Thanks

For someone that is a noob with this stuff I always recommend just get everything from Telkom. makes life much easier.

You'll get a free modem and free installation too.

The telkom simple uncapped is a joy to use after having mtn uncapped for the past two years. R514 per month and no contract. You just have to keep the package for a minimum of 3 months.

And telkoms network:erm:

You need an ADSL modem, this can be a standalone modem connected to PC with USB or a modem/router (for wireless data transfer) combo. R200-R2000
POTS filter - R50?

You can compare packages here easily - www.helkom.co.za

Im on a @Mbps OPenweb gold account - used for torrenting, youtube and PSN/average around 300gigs/month - totally shaped during business hours, so this package works for people who dont make use of the line during business hours.

Read up on a few forums and the guys not to keen on Telkom and neither am I, was thinking just for them to connect adsl line and going with a different ISP. As for the total noob thing, I'm bit technically minded and might just give it a go on my own and with some help from you guys on MyBB:p

R514 is a bit out of my budget as a monthly cost and was looking more at going for the basic uncapped packages on off for between R129 - R199 which should add up to just under R380 with adsl line rental fees.

Not to phased about the bussiness hours cos I'm at work during the day and will mostly be online at home at night. I dont even come close to 300gigs a month:erm:

The modem question was more with regards to the guys complaining about the torrents and the amount of connections by peers slowing the modem itself down so would like you guys to steer me in the right direction regarding the modem especially for the torrents.

I'm planning to get the modem in early Feb and whatever else needed in early March, OH! and the modem must have wifi connectivity cos the whole household is spoilt with the wifi connectivity of the Huawei router I have on the MTN contract.

*Edit*
The modem will be ruuning via lan cable to pc and all mobile devices to able to connect via wifi

The telkom simple deal is on month to month, and comes with a free router/modem (yes with wifi) and the ADSL line installation is free i was told if i change ISP i still keep the hardware (im not planing on changing so not an issue) , but check your self. If this is the case Maybe take one of the lowest one (5Gb for R400 that includes line rental) and if you not happy change to which isp you want
with regards to torrents on a router i have never experienced this on any router i used so not sure - But most torrents are either throttled by your ISP or lack of seeders never had an issue on the actual router

And telkoms network:erm:

Besides the issue we've been having in the last week or so it's great. And you can apply for the 25% adsl discount once you have it, not gonna get a better deal/service for the same price.

phone them....but you need to stay with them for 3 or six months or something like that...

but your line needs to be with them....and isp of course...

Also just checked what speeds i'll be getting at the closest exchange and 1mb is max speed:cry:

Might also be that the line speed upgrades must still happen at our exchange...? Which ,if I read correctly, resumed on 15 Jan...?

That R514 is including the normal telephone line which you already have. Telkom is one of the cheapest and one of the better networks too. You can also ask for a 25% discount when contacting retentions.

If you put it that way then it does make sense! I was just looking at spending max R400 for the internet extra on top of the voice line's charges...

The R514 includes a closer plan. Free calls to telkom numbers after 7 on weekdays and weekends as well, for up to an hour for each call.

This too is great if you use the phone line.

Thanks for all the replies guys! It does help alot!

Telkom sounding all the more attractive now but I still have 2 months to explore all options. The Telkom shop close to me will be seeing me tomorrow morning just to iron out the finer details as I have to give 'the mister of finance' a presentation on proceedings in order to win the tender lmfao!

Once again thanks!

Morning Nikkel

You seem to know quiet a bit for a noob ;)

Reading through the thread, you mentioned the exchange you connecting too only support up to 1Mb. I suggest contacting Telkom to find out if that will be upgraded at all. The ADSL portion on the Telkom landline will need to be activated as well.

You mentioned that an up to 2Mb package of about R500 is out of your budget. We have 2 Package on an up to 2Mb package. We have a Standard package and a Premium package. Our Premium packages are the superior package.

We recently launched a new service with our packages. You will receive a free router and extender if you purchase a package with us. You can view the packages on our website.

I can arrange for a free 7 day trial account be set up for you as well if you would like. PM me the contact details and I will be able to arrange for this to be set up.

Afrihost 1MB/s Business Uncapped and unshaped = R397pm inc Data line rental
POTS Filter R45 each @ Telkom Direct
N300 Netgear WiFi Router R1000 Or Dlink D2750u ~R700 i think
Telkom Voice line R???

Thanks for the reply @MWEB Guy!

As I mentioned my MTN contract finishes in March and it sorta only hit me now that I might have to pay the last installment at the end April but I'll find out about that closer to the time.

I'll keep your post in mind and will PM you if need be but I'm not in a real hurry right now, I'm sorta just getting my ducks in a row on some research with regards to the guys with hands on experience and on MyBB there's always loads of great help from forum members!
