Hi,

I'm borderline PC illiterate, so please be patient with this post....

I work in a very small office of only 5 people in Hyde Park. We have had endless issues with our internet line. We finally managed to convince Telkom to update the infrastructure in the area so that we could have access to an ADSL line. Which they *shockshockhorrorhorror* eventually did.

When we discussed our requirements with the guys from Telkom, we made it abundantly clear that we would need at least 8GB per month but more than likely 12GB. When they installed the line we found out that we had only been 'registered' with a 4GB cap. Now, when I speak to our sales liaison at Telkom I'm told that there is no such thing as a 8 or 12GB cap, ONLY a 4GB and that the only option we have is to top-up at the beginning of the month. While this is completely NOT what we had originally spoken about or agreed on, it seems that there is not much that we can do. Then we hit our next snag. The telkom online payment portal doesnt accept Diners Club cards (which is the company credit card), nor will it accept an AmEx card (which is the corporate card at the London office and the only other card the accountants will allow us to use for this irregular method of monthly office cost payments). So now we are sitting here with a cap that's a third of what we need and no clear way to top-up(the inconvenience of which we'd just have to suck up in exchange for having a functioning connection).

What the hell can we do??

Ouch. Still having problems? Hmmm... TelkomInternet is a lousy ISP unfortunately.

If you were to get another account unfortunately thats a whole new login name and password - which I know is a problem for you guys.

Did you sign a contract with Telkom for the 4GB account or is it working month-to-month?

I don't suppose you could cancel having Telkom as your ISP but continue to pay them for the line etc. Then get another ISP account with another company?

That is what I am hoping, as long as he wasn't roped into some kinf od 2 year contract or something...Would not put it past Telkom.

An regular Electronic funds transfer/ debit order should do the trick.

Find an reputable ISP (e.g. www.webafrica.co.za). You can buy additional prepaid cap from them. (@R70 per gig). Unlike the Telkom one, it does not disappear if you don't use it. The provide you with a username+password for that account.

Then you change the user+pwd on the router and then it runs off those prepaid gigs.

Your cards should also work with most ISPs (not sure why Telkom does not accept them).

Also make sure that your modem is not locked to your ISP. (Some Telkom modems are AFAIK).

You can also buy 1 or 2 gigs at most Pick&Pays (Axxess) although the people at the counter are usually uninformed so its sometimes a mission.

You have a good point there. We discovered very soon, after getting ADSL just how retarded the fine print is

You can get 10GB from Openweb.co.za for R459, a much better deal.

Then if you need more you can sign up with a prepaid account from Webafrica or Axxess, and only use it if you need to.

Unfortunately we are contractually obliged to stay with Telkom. Initially we were going to upgrade our diginet line from 64k (yes we were still in the dark ages) to 512k or 1mb, but they said it would take longer to get that infrastructure into place than the right wires or what not for an ADSL line. So no, cancelling Telkom as an ISP is not an option. Getting secondary usernames and passwords is also not an option for us (dont ask me, ask our IT guys in London). So.... is the general consensus that there is no way to get around the monthly cap issue?

That is unfortunate then. The only way to get around the issue, is to top up each month, or a few times each month in your case, as Telkom suggested :(

Just a thought...

Couldn't you personally pay for the top-up with a VISA or Mastercard, and have the business reimburse you?

Otherwise theres no other option I suppose.
