Hi All,

I posses and love my MacMini.

I have applied for Adsl from Telkom (waiting, tick-tock).

My Mini does not have wireless capabilities and I don't really require it. Can anyone recommend a good (and reasonable) modem - also are USB modems viable?

Any and all help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
MC

PS. I was told by Telkom that their USB adsl modem does not work on Mac - anybody successfully ued it on their Mac?

No, get a regular router and use the LAN option.

BTW, you can get get the Canyon CN-WF518 USB wifi dongle - they're cheap and work in OSX. I bought one two or so years ago from PC International in Randburg for about R180. I used it on my Mini (running Tiger) before I invested in the airport card. There is an OSX driver under the downloads section, and a thread about it here.

What koffiejunkie said. Get a non-wireless modem-router (Netgear DG834 or other) and use the LAN ports. Also handy to have extra LAN ports for Skype phones, printers or other PCs.

Don't use USB for ADSL, Ethernet works out the box, no need for drivers.

Also a Router will take a bit of strain off the Mac Mini as it does not need to dial out and manage an ADSL connection. Go for a router, my personal preference is with Linksys.

The Airport and Bluetooth kit is not too expensive for the Mac Mini. If you drop me a PM with your serial number I can query it on GSX and get you a price. I think it's about R350+- or the airport card alone, you will need to get the internal antennae as well which is a further R120 +- The Bluetooth card is about R200+-

Is that even still available? When I got it for my Mini, the box had a gian EOL stamped on.

That catch is that the Minis (PPC) that came without wireless/bluetooth, doesn't have te board that these parts screw onto/slide into, so you have to get the whole assembly. I was able to buy the whole thing in one - the cradle, the airport card, the bluetooth module and both antennas.

On, and you have to actually open the Mini - not for the faint hearted!

Thank you to EVERYone - you have been most helpful. I was informed by Telkom today that my dsl line has been activated. Not there is another challenge - I stayed in Jhb for a while and ADLS modem there was struck by lightning while connected to my Mac Mini. The Ethernet port does not work - sent it to Mac, and they say it's fine - I should just create another user account and it should be fine. Does this make sense?!?! Anyhoo. Will try tonight. Fingers crossed. Again - thanks to you all.

Sounds somewhat suspicious to me, but try it anyway. If it doesn't work, you still have USB to fall back on. There is the USB LAN module for the MacBook Air that should work (Cybermoo, could you confirm?) and if that fails, get the wireless dongle I referred to earlier if you don't want to spend the money for, or can't get stock of the Airport module for the old Mini.

About the ADSL modem, get a Netgear DG834 (wired) or DG834G (wireless).

They probably meant create another location in network preferences. Which is not suspicious at all.
You can create another user account as a last resort, to rule out any errors with osx
