hi Guys

Can you please explain how to get ADSL working on Windows 98 SE? Not even the Telkom guys could help. They should charge delivery fee not installation fees!

They mentioned something about patches to download, which I already did. Did not work. At the moment, all I get to work is Windows 2000. My modem is a USB pots, provided by Telkom.

PC: Pentium 4, 2.0 GHz... 512MB Memory. It should work? Everytime it connects I get some "vxd" error with a blue screen.

Thanks! [:)]

Hmmm, a vxd error with a blue screen means you've got an issue with the driver you're using. This is the problem with USB devices on Win98 and unfortunately the only way you're going to solve the problem is to update to a newer version of windows (unless you're keen to go through lots of crap and frustration). I suggest setting the modem to router mode and setting it up as a gateway on your network. That way its accessable to the whole network - unless of course you want it only on the 98 box, in which case I say - don't waste your time with 98, upgrade to 2000 or XP

I would suggest uninstalling the Telkom PPPoE client and going to http://www.carricksolutions.com/raspppoe.php and choose option 1.
Follow the instructions given and you should work like a charm.
Once installed(following the instructions) go to START ; RUN and typr in raspppoe and click OK.
It will bring up the RASPPPOE application and at the top you select "YOUR MODEM" and the click "query available services".
This will give you a concentrator on which you DO NOT CLICK.
Just click on "create DIAL-up connection and then click on EXIT.
This will place a shortcut to dialup on the desktop.
Double click;enter username and password and away you go.

Sorry Quazzi but you cannot set the USB modem up as a router as it is not one.

Enjoy...I find it more fun trying these things out on my own than contacting the helpdesk, albeit that they are very helpful and a few quite clued-up.

ADSL--A Damn Slow Link

Hi Sonny [:D]

The info you gave me worked like charm!

Thanks, no more blue screens, nothing. [8D]

If anyone else is having the same problems as I did, use his advice, it works 100%.

Thanks again!

Oh, I have to congratulate you on the "adsl - a damn slow link" - its the best I have heard ever! [;)]

It never stops to amaze me in how supportive end helpful the people here on MyADSL are. Well done to all you that go out of your way to assist a fellow member. Unity creates strength.
Maybe if Telkom had any savvy, they would have looked at all the value that is provided here and realised that it makes their product offering a significantly better one. OK, not all Telkom comments are compliments, but maybe they should realise there maybe some truth in the general feel by the "few" hundred unhappy customers.
RPM, you have started something GREAT here. May I suggest that you (if possible), that you extract all these bits-and-pieces that provide solutions and know-how's out from the various places and consolidate it under a single Topic (non-updateable by other members) like a FAQ?

Hi Mux

It is indeed excellent to see how helpful the members are. My aim with this site was to make certain we improve the ADSL service in SA, and solving problems like this one is a step in the right direction. I just wish Telkom will join the party.

As for your suggestion regarding the accumulation of information…a great idea. I am currently quite busy, but maybe somebody can simply group the questions (or even just a few at a time) and mail them to me. I will publish them under a technical help FAQ.

Thank to Sonny and others for the continual great help. Much appreciated guys.

Regards,

RPM

To correct the VXD error on Windows 98 without changing to RASPPPOE:

Open Start >> Programs >> Telkom SA Telkom ADSL PPPoE client >> Telkom ADSL PPPoE client;
You should now have the Profiles - Telkom ADSL interface open;
Open Connections >> Settings within this interface;
You should now have the Application Settings dialog open;
Click the Advanced button and in the Advanced Settings dialog that opens, change Network Access from Filter Driver to Protocol driver;
You may have to reboot your computer - can't remember if its necessary.

Another quirk - not sure if its Windows 98 specific - for the Marconi ADSL USB Pots Modem - and the procedure that worked for me:

The Telkom SA Telkom ADSL PPPoE client complains that there is no Adaptor with a TCPIP Stack and cannot make an ADSL connection after reinstalling Windows.

Phoning Telkom/SAIX Support on this point gets the response "Its a Windows Configuration Issue ..." leaving you high and dry.

On the ADSL USB POTS CD ( The Purple and White One that contains the Marconi Modem Drivers - not the Telkom ADSL one that installs the "Telkom SA Telkom ADSL PPPoE client" ), run RmvAdapt.exe and Windows Plug and Play will automatically reinstall your Marconi ADSL USB Pots Modem with a TCPIP stack.

I had tried reinstalling everything - didn't work - the procedure above solved the problem in less than 30 seconds.

Robin - as pi**ed off as everyone else about Telkom SUPERSLOW ADSL !!!
