Been waiting for my ADSL to be installed for quite a while. Today I was told that because I have fibre optic lines installed, I have to wait while they replace them with copper cables because it won't work otherwise. Is that true? Didn't realise it if it is, was pretty thrilled originally because I thought fibre optic cables would be better. Isn't that what Neotel is going to be using?

Its true, Neotel are using it for their core network but not for the last mile, at the moment they're planning to use wireless CDMA2000 for the last mile IIRC, unless the local loop gets unbundled.

Yup ADSL is a copper based technology. I wonder if they shorten the LL when they find fibre along the way to the exchange and put in those mini dslams, would be better in the long run.

Welcome to the club, I've been waiting 2 years for ADSL but thanks 2 fiber and 'HELLKOM' I cant get it!!!!!!!!!

I phoned Neotel and they said consumer services are launching in April!! so lets wait and see if they can offer anything:confused:

Cool, thanks. Thankfully haven't been waiting two years, only a couple of months. Apparently they in the process of changing them to copper. The guy that helps me is pretty good and has promised me a call before the weekend, so suppose I'll see then.

Wait a second here! Are you telling me that if Telkom installs fibre they remove the copper? What on earth? They provide infrastructure for ADSL 2+ (according to my limited knowledge), but won't offer it as a service. The mind boggles at the genius that is Telkom...

The only advantage of ADSL2+ without getting better bandwidth (20mbs etc.) is better syncs on current lines. I heard somewhere that you have to have a better sync with ADSL2+ for it to offer the higher speeds. No point not having a stable 4mb line (Sync issues etc.) then wanting a 20mb.

I'm all for better speeds...but I would be happy with my line being perfectly solid all the time.

Hang on, i'm a little confused... I've seen packages for ADSL over Fiber, so how does that work then?

So am I understanding this correct? They are removing faster fiber media and replacing it with slower copper? Or do they just add copper? :D

I don't know, I suppose I'll find out when they do it. I'm guessing they remove the fibre optics? From responses here I'm guessing the copper has to run from my house to the dslam or the exchange? and then the fibre optics can take over? My phone line has taken a bit of a dive in quality the last day or so, so I'm guessing/hoping they're doing something.

i recently posted about Neotel's offerings in April, the thread was removed for no reason.. if you want to hear whats comming drop me a mail at [email protected], i dont trust myadsl anymore, somethings dodgy.

kidding lol! but this sounds good, do you guys imagine this is what Neotell mght use for their technology?

I heard it is possible to have DSL when we are on fibre, all they need to do is install mini D-Slams!!!!! Can anyone confirm this??

Well a quick update. Just got a call from the guys at Telkom. I'm all hooked up at the exchange and everything is set. However because I've got the fibre optic lines I can't do a self-install so a technician will be coming over next week to install. Will find out more from him hopefully.
Going to go home anyway today and plug in my modem and see if it doesn't sync.
