I had a Telkom techie and my building site this morning, to install my ISDN line. Unbelievable, he said he'll be there are 8:30, and he was!! Thumbs up on that one!
Anyways, due to the elctricians fcuking up, nothing happened. So I chatted to the guy a bit, specifically about ADSL over Fibre (as we are running Fibre to the Estate).
Apparently you CAN get ADSL over Fibre now ... the exhange just needs some sort of additional/converter data card or something to that effect. Will try to find out a bit more

I believe that's what they do in Korea and Japan, that's how you get 50-100Mbps consumer lines. -

VDSL Very high Digital Subscriber Line 12.9 to 52.8 Mbps downstream;
1.5 to 2.3 Mbps upstream;
1.6 Mbps to 2.3 Mbps downstream 4,500 feet at 12.96 Mbps;
3,000 feet at 25.82 Mbps; 1,000 feet at 51.84 Mbps ATM networks;
Fiber to the Neighborhood

and how will that help? still gotta pay tonnes and it's not like they going to give u "free" upgrade to take real advantage of fiber.

my 2c
Well, I hear what you are saying, but considering the fact that I am using iBurst, and I am not sure about the reception in the new house (hence the ISDN backup installation), and way back when they told me I can't get ADSL over fibre, this is just some new developments that I wanted to share :D

If iBurst is still ok there, screw ADSL

AFAIK all they hav to do is install a Mini DSLAM at the Distobution point to which ur line connects before the signal goes over to fibre

Yes - i posted re this here

Yup. Telkom is rolling out VDSL. Severely crippled to suit current product range. Naturally... :(

From chats to some of their R&D team ADSL over Fibre will be available early next year... no need for mini-dslams...

But seeing will be believing....

So we will have a 4mbps capacity limited to....? As you said ,what we have now, and then we will pay for the the 4mbps line a much higher rate as it is the new technology! (as we have to pay for the TELKOM investment and upkeep ??)

LOL Pupa!

The truth is that we are being charged for tech that has already seen international market testing. The tech is NOT new and the R&D cost has been recovered already on both our current ADSL and VDSL from the design and production point of view. We are simply being overcharhed...

I made this point to ICASA when our ADSL complaint hearings took place and it was taken into concideration when the recommendations came out from ICASA. Now we are waiting to see what is up with the draft regulations.
