I currently have both a SAIX and an IS ADSL account so I've been able to do some performance comparisons:

With IS connection:
my torrents were maxing out at 4-7KB/s
When updating my website I'd get a max upload speed of 12KB/s
Noticable delay in web sites loading for normal browsing (e.g. about 2-3 secs before myadsl forum loads)

Switching to the SAIX account I find the following:
I get my torrents maxing out at 42KB/s
When updating my website I get a max upload speed of 40KB/s
Regular browsing is much "snappier" (e.g. myadsl forum loads almost instantly)

Now I'm torn cos I was planning to switch from my current SAIX account to an IS one with 30GB free local browsing (not available on SAIX AFAIK) from November but there's such a large performance difference I'm thinking I should probably stick with the SAIX account.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

Performance:

This is one of those strange arguments. Its different for a lot of people depending on your geographical location and so forth.

Everybody knows that SAIX is better for international gaming. Having said that there is much debate on which one is better. I think IS people swear in its defence, mainly because its telkom's competition.

If they both cost the same go for SAIX it just seems to browse faster and is more consistent. IS on the other hand doesn't hardcap so 30GB local is a big (very big) advantage.

For Forex traders, the SAIX accounts are the industry norm.

Its a matter of taste, but everybody has there favourite.

GO IS GO!

No.

IS has been maxing out my line in all departments. Both were bad last night because of problems I think. But this morning IS is flying again!

42kb/s uploads all the time on IS!

SAIX downloads are so badly shaped, I can't even get 3kb/s on my P2P's, IS gives me 38kb/s WITHOUT any proxy!

Well i am probably mad but here is my plan.
5Gb IS account (?openweb ?nukecap)
5Gb Web africa Shaped
1GB web Africa Unshaped.

I am hoping that most of the time i will find one of the three accounts working.

It does seem to depend on your physical location. But if torrenting is your priority, rather use local sites and get up to 30gb, no matter the speed. SAIX might fly at 40KB, but then you just hit your cap sooner.

are there any local torrent sites if so what are they

You won't get an answer to your question. No need for those sites to be made public. Most of them are invite only. Plus with the way you are asking, no one would even want to help you.

This is strange, Ive been purring along with my IS account at max torrent speeds atm 54k/s :)

SAIX is dead, specially yesterday, torrents was dead.

Are you using of of the local torrent sites? I got the huge slowdown with one of the local ones...

Its probably terrible seeders on local torrents.

Im doing downloads internationally.

I'm not to clued up on the network side, but if I ping www.macromedia.com for instance through Saix, I get a 500ms response time. What would the same give you on an IS account? Please don't flame me if the question is a bit basic, all I know is ping and then the general ftp upload and browser experience :)

Seeing as I have access to both IS and SAIX til the end of this month I'm prepared to run a bunch of tests and post the results here. Problem is I don't really know what tests to run... :D

...so, can the network gurus here please give me a list of things I should test so that I can do this? Ta.

Ping will not prove anything, so throw that out of the window.

Do datastreaming tests, this would show the real performance.

Ping is allways unshaped, well 99.9% of the time and betwee SAIX and IS, this is the case. When you transfer data over the actual connection and not just a simple icmp packet, then shaping kicks in and you will see the difference in stability.

Why not run something like tcpIQ. One day saix account, next day IS account. There are many other speed tests around the forum. Just give it a search

Cheers

To be quite frank I think I am going to stick with SAIX for now, IS have been a little to unstable for me.

Clipse dont get your panties into a knot !

oh.. dont worry, I stopped wearing panties long ago *pretty old fashion if you ask me*

I just tried to make a clear point, ping doesnt prove sustainable latency.
