Ok thinking of getting the 192 home connection from telkom and a ISP account from Web Africa. Now I already have a normal phone line, on telkom's site they say you pay for a exchange connection as well (R92), is that extra on top of the current line rental I pay? So excluding that I should pay R270 for Telkom and R199 for WA for the 3gig bundle so in total I am looking at R469...or am I missing something here?
Also if I do a self install do I still pay Telkom the R404 for installation?

You pay R270 for ADSL line rental and R92 for residential line rental and that's all. Then add another R199 for ur ISP. If u do self install u dont have to pay for installation but I've heard ppl getting charged regardless...just means u have to fight with telkom for a refund.

Ur total would be R270 + R92 + R199 p/m so take 469 and add another R92

it'll be R270 + R199.

installation will be R404. unless you get the contract, you get free installation and a free very nice 4 port router/modem. (Billion)

the contract lasts for 2 years. if you are going to be using DSL for 2 years, i suggest you take the contract as it saves you quite a bit of bob (R1000 about) and there are no catches to it whatsoever. you will always pay the same price per month as any non-contract subscriber. plus, there isn't even going to be SNO broadband for the next 2 years.. so we'll still be stuck with telkom. i say this because some people might say that you shouldn't sign the contract because ''SNO is coming..." yeah, coming with DSL in 2 - 3 years, my friend!

i also suggest you go with TelkomInternet ISP as they are not hard-capping at 3GB. looks like average usage for Feb is around 12GB.

take care!

yes, and be hardcapped, and banned from the service if you accidently use more than 3GB's.

They told me I abused their system, and banned me after I used 16GB's.

I STRONGLY suggest you DON'T go for TelkomInternet!

how many other people has this happened to? first time i've heard of it!

dont worry about adding the line charge in because your already paying it without adsl

because you have a line you pay every month so should be added in

This is strange -many people have reported exceeding their cap by far more and AFAIK all that happens is they have been capped.

@phazer_ - if you can do the self install then go for it and save yourself the r404. My advice dont sign a contract - you dont know whats going to happen in the next 6 months let alone 2 years and while there is a buy out clause for early termination you'll end up paying more. I had a look on digital planet and even they have a modem for under r250.

TelkomSA.net has an arbitrary capping policy after the 3gb you've paid for. The others you get what you pay for and no more. If you're into newsgroups then consider an IS account with the likes of openweb as - if memory serves - you'll get an additional 28gb of local traffic after your 2gb international is used up.

@cableguy - just out of curiosity how much traffic did you average per month before feb's 16gb?

bwana v.8, nothing is going to happen in the next 6 months - 2 years :(
But you dont know that do you? Durban looks set to offer WiFi - http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=37903 - how many other areas will go the same way? Quite a few me thinks.

Sentech is set to be doing some major overhauling with all the money they got from the budget.

MoC is supposed to be making some major announcements next month - llu? sat3/safe liberalization? Who knows.

The SNO could start offering adsl this year.

My point is we dont know whats going to happen in the next 6 months.

@phazer. That is all correct except that IS local is currently uncapped. There have been a number of IS-related issues recently, but there is no local cap.

And as far as anything that postmanpot says goes, don't judge him too harshly, he works for telkom.

Thanks for clearing that up for me too - dont know why I got 28gb stuck in my head

bwaba v.8 has a point, keeping it monthly would be better as the whole telecoms scene is in shambles, don't know whats coming this year.

correct. The saving one makes on not taking a modem(mayb 300 bucks) is hardly worth being tied into a contract with anyone, let alone telkom , when the whole dsl market is in such a period of flux and growth....

Great thanks for all the great advice. Ordered yesterday and went for the month for month subscription, so no contract for me. Now to research the ISP's a little more, Web Africa looks good at 3gig's for R122. Basically what I want is a SAIX backbone ISP as I would like to play some games on the SGS servers. So something like a 3gig cap international and a big or unlimited local cap would be great! Anyone got any ideas on ISP's that offers a package like that?

I don't think WebAfrica offers 3gig for R122 - AFAIK it is R199
