Was at a client this morning:

They applied for ADSL192. Modem is a NetGear DG834GUK.

Modem syncs fine with Telkom's network (Downstream 1168 and Upstream 384). I then used a XsiNet (ISDSL) and a WebAfrica (SAIX) account to create connection to internet. Authentication 100%, no problem.

When I however want to browse with Internet explorer, it just says "Page cannot be displayed" after a while.

Doing a traceroute with the WA account yield the following:

tracert www.google.co.za
tracing to www.l.google.com [216.239.37.104]
1. 192.168.0.1
2. dsl-146.192.01.telkomdsl.co.za [165.146.192.01]
3. Request timeout
4. Request timeout
5. etc...

What can it be? If I callout Telkom, they'll say there's nothing wrong because it's syncing with their network. Will try with another modem (going to try that tomorrow), but why would it sync and authenticate fine, but not let through any traffic? Looked under the connection status, it receives no packets from the WAN, but sends packets fine.

Please help.

Try another modem, if that doesn't work just log a fault...

Had something similar to that before and it ended up at a tech punching some buttons in the exchange...

Until you "verify" the ADSL installation you will not be able to get out of the Telkom network. Go to www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl to run the verification test. I'm not sure if you have to use the Teklom guest account while doing this (Username: guest1@telkomadsl, password: guest1). On this page you will need to enter the telephone line number and the order number. Allow 3 minutes for the test to be performed. If it passes, the ADSL service will not be available for up to 30 minutes. If it fails, then you will need to call Telkom at 0800 375 375. This is all described in the welcome letter that your client should have received from Telkom. If your client only applied for ADSL192 then I'm sure you will notice the sync speeds will be considerably slower after the line has been verified.

Thanks JAS. Will do this before opening up the new modem.

Will report back.

Thinking about it, I've tried a traceroute to www.isdsl.net, etc with the IS account, and it just timed out completely, didn't even pass the first route. So I recon the verification might be the answer. Don't know why Telkom never did the verification though. B@stards.

I think JAS is correct I had a similar problem with my adsl at first...

Yup, phoned the client. Logged in with Telkom's guest account, and the verify page displayes 100%. Gives her an error when putting in her details though, told her she must phone Telkom to sort it out.

Thanks guys! Much appreciated.
