I live in Equestria, specifically in the Equestria estate. Got my ADSL installation the other day and I am experiencing 650+ ping constantly. Have a 2Mb uncapped account with Afrihost. The noise on my line is 55.5db which is bad. Average DL speed I would say is about 25kB/s except for P2P connections which reach about 100kB/s.

Hey dangermouse! Welcome to the party. I live right on the other side of the mountain - in Faerie glen - my friends, posters on myBB and various of my neighbours have confirmed this exact situation - refer below to my post in an Are complaint about Faerie glen.

Hey guys, I live up against the hill behind the big Pick n Pay in Faerie Glen and I have been experiencing the most horrible pings the last two weeks. It's almost impossible to do anything on my internet - this happens only in peak times, and sometimes at night up until 10pm.

It happens with my telkom and afrihost accounts - I usually have great attenuation.

Line: 4mbit
Sync: 4096/516

I've been hearing complaints in the area as well - but nobody seems to post large latency issues here. Also at the exchange in petrick.

Pleochism, I assume then its a congested exchange issue - my issue is exactly what you described.

We just need to phone them and keep the pressure on them I guess :(

From what the Telkom technicians have told us in the silver lakes, equestria, wilgers, faerie glen area, it is due to congestion on the exchange and they estimate we could look at our lines and pings stabilising around mid may/june.

We're all very frustrated but also powerless, best we can do is wait this out and enjoy the fact that we still get 100kbps down speed on downloads.

Do you think that we go to the same exchange?
I do not only experience those stats during the day or peak times, its like that all the time.

June is so far away its not even funny. And meanwhile we must just keep paying for internet that is un-useable.

I hate Telkom!

Yeah it started as only peak times but its now 100% congested - that post of mine was done a week or so ago.

Regardless, we're screwed and June is absolutely ridiculous - I do agree.

We should be on the same exchange, but even if we aren't people in every area was told about congestion - think we can confidently confirm its that :(

I play games slightly competitively from time to time - that added, I haven't played a computer game in about 2-3 weeks due to ping issues, so I know that feel.

Downloads are slow, browsing is slow - streaming anything is just impossible.

May/June...WTF!?!?!?! I'm in Wilgers and have had issues for 2 weeks as well. Guess it started for everyone round about the same time. This is crazy!!!

Nope...mine is still giving issues...any time between 5-9pm my latency shoots up and my dl speed starts to plummet. Happens each night without fail.

My speed stays okay(ish) but the latency goes to a minimum of 600ms.

And this also happens at about 5pm - 11pm.

During the day the latency is fine and the speed is great.

On weekends it is pretty much terrible the whole time.

I've also started experiencing similar issues in the Tijgervallei/Silver Lakes area (tijgervallei exchange). My line has started to randomly sync at different speeds and completely drops sync every now and then. Haven't had a chance to test the latency yet. It also tends to happen more at night/early morning than during the day.

I've got the same problems... High latency between myself and the exchange rendering online gaming unplayable.

I have an Afrihost uncapped 2Mbps account.

I'm so bleak at the moment, this line is specifically for gaming so i'm not concerned about slow downloads . The Telkom technicians who try to assist from time to time have no idea what high latency is and they always tell me that there is no problem.. XD

My numbers look pretty much exactly the same.

Telkom technician was at my house last week and said my router is the problem, at that time I went into a state of laughter. But wait there is more he then got a new router and said we should test it. I agreed and we tested it. The laughter was soon to continue as the technician did not know how to set up the router to connect to the internet. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAA.

The lesson in all this is that they are basically useless so dont expect too much.

About the speed. I also had a 2Mb uncapped Afrihost account and my speed during the evening hours were about the same as your, maybe a bit slower. I then switched to a 2Mb business ADSL account from Afrihost. The speed is now pretty much good all the time but my latency is about 400ms average during the evening hours.

Online gaming is impossible.

That suck Dangermouse,

From the ISP perspective i'n not concerned about throttling at certain times, I do however expect to have low latency at all times as this connection is specifically for this purpose. This is a service I pay for and they will not be doing me any favours by resolving this.

I'll post if I have any improvement.

The problem is that Afrihost are powerless as the problem is the physical infrastructure which telkom must upgrade. And as we know telkom that might take a while.

According to an earlier post Telkom said they would upgrade the exchange by mid May- early Jun.. So the conclusion is that untill that time or at whatever time Telkom decides to upgrade the exchange there is absolutely nothing we can do but wait.

Are we sure there is any truth in the statement that Telkom will upgrade the exchange? Is it for May/June 2015 maybe?

Here's the rhetorical one.. Why did Telkom not pre-empt this, knowing full well the number of connections in the area, as well as the growth in the area, and accordingly upgrade the exchange before it became congested? XD

Anyway.. I do know the answer to this..

The answer is Telkom is a government owned company that has a monopoly on the market. Thus Telkom is run by a bunch of complete idiots and there are no competitors so your options are to stick with them or have no DSL internet at all. They know this and that is why their service delivery is so poor. You cant say FU Telkom and go to another service provider because there are none.

This is the kind of thing I have to deal with on a 2Mbps line (Afrihost Uncapped) - It's not the ISP's fault, I just really wish Telkom could pls take not that this exchange needs an UPGRADE!!!!

Anyone having ADSL problems in equestria. My line is down, stating unconfigured on the router

Yep, I've had a few disconnections this afternoon. Telkom phoned me today to tell me that my problem had been resolved.... but of course it had not..

Seems like the makings of the next Zimbabwe. When high end infrastructure like DSL starts to deteriorate and there is no motivation to resolve the problem, we have ventured onto the slippery slope.
