Hi,

I thought the benefit of going through Web Africa would be the customer (me) not having to deal with telkom, yet I've had to phone them twice now to find out what's going on with my ADSL line.

Turns out its been activated since Wednesday and no one at Web Africa have contacted me! Telkom claim it's activated but cant tell if its working or not.

My router is configured properly, it doesn't seem to be syncing.

Is it possible they've plugged me in to a faulty port or something?

Any assistance appreciated - I've been waiting ages now for the bloody phone line installation + adsl activation and i'm nearing my patience's end.

Thanks in advance.

Can you go to the telkom site or webafrica? Otherwise try using the telkom guest account?

"Your ADSL Service request has already been processed."

I did that yesterday, thanks.

I'm just not sure how to proceed - Web Africa tell me the line is not active yet and Telkom tell me the line is active.

My router wasnt syncing last time I saw but some people tell me the router needs login details to sync and some say it syncs without login details - what is the truth behind this?

Any help appreciated.

Try using the following login name/password and see if you can access the telkom website (link above)

login : guest@telkomadsl

password : guest

If you can access the site and no other sites then Web Africa has not been set up yet.

If you cannot access the Telkom site, then contact them and report that the ADSL service request as not processed properly and they need to reset it .... has happened once with me on a customer site.

As far as i know, you WILL need to put your account login details into the router for it to allow access to the web. Also, is your IP's all correct? Are you using DHCP?

The confusion could also be Telkom referring to your ADSL Line being active, while WebAfrica is referring to your Data Plan NOT being active...

Thanks for all the replies,

I just popped home now to test some of your tips!

My Mercerr router's status just says "Connecting" - Tried on multiple accounts (a friend's afrihost account which is live, my webafrica account which data portion is live and the telkom guest account (which the telkom customer care giver i was talking to said will not work because im with Web Africa).

Nothing seemed to connect - I know the router is working though, tested it at said friend's place.

I just recieved an email from Web Africa saying that telkom advised them that there is a "technical port issue at your (my) exchange."

So I guess that must be the problem, but Telkom assured me that everything on their side was checking out and they could "detect" my router after they ran their test.

So what does this mean? Telkom came, activated my ADSL at my exchange, and the techie went home without even testing if it was working?

I know telkom are uselss but this is just pathetic if true...

I'm just hoping my ADSL will be working for the weekend or I'll be a sad panda.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and help!

Edit: I'm unsure of any DHCP settings that I should be using.

Basically your PC and router talk to each other using "IP Addresses" (Think of them as Street/House addresses). The PC needs to know where the Router "Lives" and the Router needs to know where the PC 'Lives". For this to happen we use IP Addresses...

By default your Router would more than likely be 192.168.0.1

You need to make sure that your PC's IP address is also on the 192.168.0.xx Range. The last set of numbers are kinda like the house number. Each device in the network will have a different number to distinguish itself on the network. EG Router 192.168.0.1, then your pc could be anything from 192.168.0.2-254

If you click start (In windows) and run or search for "cmd", a black and white screen comes up... type "ipconfig /all" and let me know what your "IPv4 Address" and "Default Gateway" Addresses are?

P.S. Sounds like it could be a porting issue on Telkom's side, but lets try the basics just to be sure...

Naah, if it was it would have told him that his ADSL is not synchronized. He said its saying "Connecting"

Frankly, I have to ask, are you sure your line is plugged into the correct port on the router?

Can't see it not being, as there is only 1 possible RJ11 Port on the router (assuming you mean the telephone wire RJ11 as the RJ45 port wouldn't matter in a standard home install)

I didn't check which model he has, sorry. Just as a matter of interest my Billion has two RJ11 ports at the back and I sometimes make the mistake of plugging the ccable into the "Line" port instead of the "ADSL" port. The Line port is for a normal phone or fax to plug into :)

BTW voiDude, did you get my PM?

I replied to your PM, thanks.

Only 1 possible phone line can go into the router so can't be going wrong there.

carstensdj: My pc and router are on the same IP range but I havent added any IP's on the routers DHCP settings.

@grav80: Sorry, never seen a RJ11 2port before, making ur suggestion valid :P Nice one!

@voiDude: Nah as long as the IP Range is the same, Subnet is 255.255.255.0 and Default Gateway points to 192.168.0.1 (All defaults) then you should be fine in that department, so to say... Would only need to manually assign addresses if you have a large network, or devices like Cameras and so on connected to the network. For a simple PC connecting to the Net, default DHCP settings should suffice...

On your POTS Filter (Small box on wall where telephone line goes into) you should have 1cable going into one side and two ports on the other side... Make sure your ADSL Port goes to your router and the other one would go to a telephone...

voiDude - as per PM, I had your line reset and its still not syncing. If you have a POTS filter, remember not to plug the router into it. Plug the router directly into the wall socket. This could also cause your router not to sync at times

But yeah, like I said in the PM, everything on your port looks normal. You're doing something wrong at home :)

Just getting back to the login details...

From what i understand, WebAfrica would've given u a username and login right? If so, you need to log into your router and somewhere in the settings will be a place to insert username and password as im sure you've seen... Re-enter those details in again to be sure they are entered correctly. Sounds like your line isn't authenticating. Could this be a possible cause grav80?

Yes, if it can't authenticate then it will never sync (because only after authenticating will the DSLAM synchronze his line speed with his profile)

Hence I'm suspecting he's made a mistake somewhere

I've been sitting with a similar problem, ordered ADSL about 2 weeks ago, then on Saturday my line went totally dead, reported this on Monday morning. I also received an sms on Monday morning to say ADSL was activated.

On Monday afternoon the line was back on again, so connected router to outlet, getting no ADSL signal, phoned through again to query error, Telkom did some tests and said it looked like an error at the exchange, would send a techie and should take a couple of days to resolve, phoned yesterday was told that technician would be sent out to look at problem, phoned this morning apparently it's now been escalated. So much for SIO being a simple process.

Anyway, still waiting.

Telkom is Stupid... The Never installed the line but notified you that it was. Just Log a fault with your ISP and Telkom. Happens when you apply for adsl through ISP.

As I said earlier, ADSL is active on the line (DSL upto 1024) and the port is active
