A friend of mine has problems with his 512kbps ADSL (with Mweb account). The ADSL was synchronizing at a weird speed (640kbps down, 384kbps up), so I then phoned Telkom to reset it, which fixed it to sync at 512kbps and 256kbps again.

Currently the ADSL line is up and the PPPoE connection is open, but the ADSL light on the Telkom ADSL 5100 router is blinking for a milisecond every couple of seconds, instead of staying on.
This results in the Internet not working at all. For some reason I can do dns lookups just fine, but when I try to ping www.aardvark.co.za, 75% of the packets are lost! Like it would receive 3 packets in a row, and then it would be offline again for a couple of seconds. I can't even open a single website or even telnet to public-route-server.is.co.za

We have disconnected all the telephones in the house, including the alarm. We've also tried a D-Link ADSL router, and the same problem occurs.

Also, I've checked the attenuation and SNR noise margins, which are fine (20-25dB attenuation and 15-20db noise margin).

Help would be appreciated

I'm absolutely stumped as to what may cause the problem here... I don't know whether its a line fault or something else on Telkom's side?

Have the same thing here in rondebosch, only able to connect intermittently, crappy speeds, doesn't what account I use.

Peder, the account is working at the office, so its definitely not an account problem.

Sackboy, no, I've tried both Mweb & Telkom sites, none of which were working.

We've phoned Telkom again and this time they said that they can see that the line is dropping, so they have logged the fault and will send a technician out. I hope that they could fix it though.

Getting problems here too this morning - line drop every couple of minutes. Hoping it fixes itself and don't feel like spending the day listening to Telkom music.

Log a fault with telkom, sounds like a problem with equipment in exchange.
You can have them call you back when a consultant is available. Just press the buttons, and it will ask if you want to be called back.

Problem solved at last - after a techie fixed it somehow.

We've phone Telkom a couple of times, and they were able to see that the ADSL connection dropped like 20 times during the time that we've phoned them. One of the persons in the call centre said she logged the fault so that a techie would address the problem. We've got the SMS stating that the error was logged, but a few minutes later we've got another SMS stating that the problem was resolved, and it WASN'T!

At least its working now - thanks for the advice, webyep

I have the same problem now for a few weeks now... Called telkom 3 times already and all thy do is reset my damn port.. then it works for a day or 2 then it resumes back to the way it was.

I'm another poor sap in the same boat.

I think a big problem with Telkom is that their phone support staff are not ADSL technicians, and do not know the first thing about ADSL. I commented on my fluctuating SNR ratio to a lady there this morning and she was like, "SNR? Lul, whut?"

She told be about four times to make sure that I was using a filter on the damned phone.

Still, I made her log a fault. Hopefully an actual techician will look at it and see a problem.

I first thought that the ADSL problem was due to the router synchronizing at a wrong rate (640/320) instead of 512/256. I then asked to reset the port, which they did, but the problem persisted.
Our SNR/Attenuation values didn't fluctuate at all - it remained more or less constant at 12/20.

We mentioned that the ADSL was necessary for business, then they gave it a higher priority :D The technician then came the following morning and fixed it.
