Here is the problem that i am experiencing:

My dsl connection always stays up, it doesnt drop.

But my internet tends to go a few hours without being able to connect to my ISP or if it does it has some major packet loss - i have tried with a few accounts so i am pretty sure its not my isp's fault.

Other times my internet works like it should but this is less than 20% of the time..

It tends to be at its worst when its raining so i assume that it could be an exposed wire or something?

My SNR margins seem to be fine but they are also a bit erratic, my DS margin jumps between 9 and 14 in the space of a min

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.5 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 12.0 db 12 db

Anyone know what the problem could be?

Noise Margin 12.0 db 12 db

there you this tad low 12 is like min to sync, try new filter or router see if it works :)

6dB is the minimum SNR (noise) margin required to establish an ADSL link, so 12dB should suffice.
I have to say that 12dB SNR is very low (which is bad) for such a low line attenuation (which is good)!

So I also second hereticangel's resolution on either a new filter or modem. I'd suggest that you borrow a modem first before just buying one.

Sometimes you can improve the SNR margin by switching between G.Dmt modulation and ADSL2+ modulation. I presume that you're currently using G.Dmt modulation, so it would be worth while to lock it on ADSL2+ modulation.

Btw: what modem are you using?

Its a telkom netgear, white one, DG834GU, pretty new.

I changed to adsl2+ and the margins stayed about the same:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.5 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 12.5 db 12 db

I also have SNR of 12dB downstream but I am syncing at 10meg though.
Sync 10008kb 1024kb
Att 23 9
SNR 12 11
Drops connection once in a while but that's not really much of an issue
Tend to have modem freezes especially when my line runs at full speed for too long though

...may I ask if your ISP is WA?

As I had similar problem (+ cannot access Google services) with one of my "lines" but only with WA accounts; reset account / line, change dsl port, had Telkom rewire premises, changed routers X5 (with / without trendchip , changed filters, changed lan cabling, etc.

Sent +/- 140 emails to support that continually blames Telkom, eventually cancelled 50GB Titan, 30 GB Titan to be cancelled next week - moved line back to Telkom & signed up with TRL Tech & Afrihost.

If WA is your ISP, suggest you obtain a free 1GB account from Afrihost and see if the problem persist or ask TRL for a test account.

I no longer have any connectivity issues and all services run far better than on WA's infrastructure.

Before I get lashed by fanboys - WA does not work for me however not saying it won't work for you.

Regards

Mike

lol i also have a titan WA account but i dont think it is coz i have an afrihost account it also cant connect or suffers from the packet loss :(

Is it possible it could be a faulty port at the exchange?

Double check - Report line fault, once tech calls to conf app assk him to switch port in exchange as all equip at premises ok
