Hey Guyz,

I am currently using a 4096 ADSL line at home and I am not too impressed.

Here are some stats from the router:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 7.2 12.0 dB
Line Attenuation 50.6 26.5 dB
Errored Seconds 342634 200
Loss of Signal 314 314
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 691 0
Data Rate 4096 384 kbps
Latency FAST FAST

Is there any chance of increasing the quality of this line?
Should I rather just drop back to a 384?

Drop back, that is what I am doing... I requested today to drop back to 512 and I am only 1/2 km from the exchange!

I get:

Test from Axxess to (You)

Your current bandwidth reading is:
3.28 Mbps

Which means you can download(Max) at 420.25 KB/se

To answer the above question, it is possible for Telkom to sync you lower, but you don't need to go as low as 384, maybe close to 3mb or even 2mb, but just be patient for the bright guys on the forum to respond, I suck with router stats.

Thanks for the info guyz...

Might request a drop down to 3Mbit tomorrow and see if the quality of the connection improves at all.

Stick around, one of the guys familiar with modem stats will be around soon. Tonight's not a good night for testing, internet isn't working that great.

Also, just check that all your phones or faxes are going through filters, make sure your telephone cable going to the router is not "touching" or having interference from plugs like speakers or pc power cables, small things to check.

Lastly, switch the router off for about 20 minutes and switch it back on, sometimes the router needs to completely refresh on a new line ;)

@alf101, I will hang around for some more info before I drop the speed (its been this bad for about a month, a couple of days won't kill me :) )

@teraside, the setup itself is pretty clean considering cabling. I have actually had the router off for more than 20 minutes (sometimes it gets so bad that I rather disconnect considering the amount of wastage taking into account all the CRC errors)

I am currently trying to get Telkom to sort the physical line out (which is what I suspect it is)...

Ok, considering that I would suggest seeing how it goes after Telkom sorts it out, I doubt the guys on the forum will be able to help more considering that info, maybe try the 3mb route and see if it improves ;)

Thanks teraside,

The main reason for posting this thread was just to find out if those values are at all acceptable?

The SNR seems very low, The Att very high ... and I don't even want to consider the amount of Errored seconds :(

I tend to lean towards a line problem, I'd suggest staying on 4mb and see how it is after they replace the line, are you on a business or residential package? Business takes preference to Telkom over residential ;)

Residential :(

But it looks like I might be getting somewhere with them eventually. (Got a bit gatvol and started screaming instead of asking nicely :) )
