My ADSL line kept dieing last night every minute, I would get a connection for about a minute a then it would just die. The 1st call to telkom went okay, the guy reset my exchange port on their side, something to do with the DSLAN i presume and it was okay while i was talking to him. I then throught the issue was fixed but it happened again.

I placed a second call where the guy actually tested my line fully from there side. He came back with there was -23 DB on the line (its a 4Meg) and something about metallic. I told him that I was running a 5-10m telephone cable from the lounge to the PC for which he said is the problem , the cable has died blah blah. I bypassed my Surge protector and it continued to work but then died again in an hour.

I then moved the router right next to the telephone jack and ran an ethernet cable to the PC. This worked , but this morning before I left i saw that the router was trying to get a connection so it obviously was dying.

I called our the ISP we use at work and he explained that I would need to put an ADSL pots filter into the wall socket and then from there into the surge protecter. I was under the impression that the ADSL filter was only for your telelphone so you dont get the static. Can anyone confirm this?

I think I have one at home but im not sure if its a splitter or the filter. Is there a difference here?

I found that the filter added static, so I eventually threw it away and my adsl has worked without it for 2 years now, and so has the land line...
you will probably need to get one before you call one of the technicians out though, because if they see you are not using a filter they will slap you with a call out fee

That is just it, Ive never had one? Will it make a difference is really my question.

I'm also getting a similar problem Cider.
I upgraded to 4mbit 2 days ago and the line is stable.

But for some reason my Telkom account disconnects 2-3 hours after being on the net and I gotta restart the router by turning it on/off.

there is no analogue, no physical phone whatsoever.

Wall socket > surge protector > router > PC ...

I just did that now. Connected and hoping no d/c's!
Also Telkom are having problems with their sat3 link. Maybe give it a few days to sort out?
