ADSL Questions

I have a few questions about ADSL. These may sound very stupid. Dont know much about ADSL. Please help

1. Is telkom the only ADSL provider.
2. Do you have to pay monthly for ADSL line? and how much a month it cost?
3. If you have a normal telephone line can you use it as an ADSL line? Any monthly cost?
4. What is an ADSL router? Do i need a ADSL line if i buy a router?

package 384 + 1gb for R169 per month - this includes line rental and internet service provider.

1. Nope, many others www.xdsl.co.za www.cybersmart.co.za etc
2. YES, to rent the line from telkom R152
3. Normal telephone line needs to be activated to adsl R152 p/m on top of telephone line rental of R131.
4. ADSL router allows you to communicate with your internet service provider and you do need an adsl line for this.
they usually cost R400 to R1000 for a decent one depending on your usage .(wireless etc)

1. Yes, although a number of ISP's can handle that for you.
2. Yes. Between R180 and R420 (don't know the exact prices) depending on line speed. Can be cheaper if you're going through an ISP. Add R130 for the Telkom Tax.
3. Any ADSL line can be used as a normal phone line. The opposite depends on Telkom.
4. Router = modem. It's the device that connects your PC to your ADSL line and generally handles your connection. You need an ADSL line and router if you want to use ADSL (Although the "router" has other uses).

I'm currently in process of getting uncapped internet myself
Went to telkom store and signed up for a phone line.
My isp - looking at xdsl - their service so far has been good and the running a special of R159 p/m includes adsl line rental, activation and 1gb.
Then signing up with www.digichilli.co.za - spicy for R300 p/m

I know digichilli have been getting a bad rap lately but they seem to be improving, so I'll try and support them.
