Hi,

we plan on installing a 4MBs ADSL line and running an uncapped shaped service through MWEB for 3 users in one household. Can youll please advise me on an adsl router that would cater for the following:

- speed limiting for each IP (we want to avoid sharp objects being hurled at siblings due to one person hogging the line speed). Is it possible for the speed limiting to be dependant on how many users are online so in otherwords, if only one of us are using the internet, the router would allow the one person the full speed usuage?
- a built in firewall if nessesary
- a gigabit lan connection (or would it be better to add a gigbit switch onto the router)
- a powerful wifi signal (the one user is downstairs on a double story house)

id appreciate any input from your side. my budget is R2000 but im sure i could negotiate through methods of intimidation for further compensation from the siblings.

Check out the Netgear DGN2200:

You aren't going to have a gigabit switch built-in, but it does have a firewall and has pretty decent wireless.

RE the speed control - mainstream routers won't really have anything like this, you may want to look at a D-Link router, but use 3rd party firmware which has QoS based on application and/or IP:

QoS on dd-wrt firmware Explained:

Otherwise you could use one PC as your network gateway with 3rd party software installed - such as Antamedia Bandwidth Manager, but I don't think this is going to work too well in your environment.

On Netgear's router management there is a section for "QoS Setup" where you can set a 'Priority' for each connected device (using MAC address) from "Lowest > Low > Normal > High... etc.)

Not quite sure if this splits/manages the bandwidth or if it simply kills the bandwidth to low priority devices. Let me know if anyone has tried this :)

Features .........

Please note that according to the ad blurb
The QoS is only on the WIRELESS section of the router that is why it has four SSIDS
The printer functionality is nice
I find that LAN traffic at Gigabit speeds between the attached WIRED devices is sometimes problematic.

You could always get a CISCO wireless router which does not have Gigabit ports but has a true managed four port switch on which you can do VLAN's , Trunking , STP and all the rest of that stuff :)

I don't know of any ADSL modems that has shaping things like you want. For a setup like that you'll most likely need an ADSL modem + a separate router for shaping.

eg. D-Link DSL-2750U (ADSL modem + 802.11n WiFi AP + 4 port 100Mbps switch) + MikroTik RB750G (Router with 5x Gigabit ports, which you can use for shaping).

What is your budget?

Thanks all. Pada, my budget is R2000 at the moment but i can stretch it a bit if required. im checking up your suggested setup as we speak. How does Flidiot's suggestion sound to youll by the way? it seems very cost effective.
