Hi all.

Will be getting an ADSL line installed pretty soon, so wanna start looking at routers.

Any advise for me? Will need wireless, and don't wanna spend to muhc more then R650. Will be indoor use only and Wi fi won't be passing through many walls.

Thanks.

Netgear routers get very hot, I'm testing one know as I type, man this thing boils?

Netgear dg834gt

A friend has one as well and he had to stand it up on it's side to cool off.

I have a dlink at home, runs much cooler with no hassles since begining march.

IMO you aren't going to get anything decent for that price.
I would recommend a D-link or a Netgear.
What are you intending on using Wifi for. Its not so much about range as it is about speed. N is the protocol to go for if you intend to stream any kind of multimedia. Otherwise G would be fine for general usage, I think even for gaming...

Yes, my netgear also runs hot, but its an awesome router. On its side it works just fine.

On it's side it does run fine and netgear make awsome routers I agree - although that said, I do know people who have to reset their routers if they are not on their side to dissipate the heat.

another thing, don't electronics that generate heat also use more electricity - the netgear I have uses 12v 1.5a power adapter?

Well I'm running a fly lead to my room, so I won't be using the wireless at all. Folks will be using it for general browsing and e-mail. Maybe a bit of skype also.

Also found few things that look decent on ZAPS at decent prices.

No, Netgear make sh*t routers. Their corporate products are fine but their consumer products are plagued by firmware issues.

Jokes aside - the netgear I'm testing now on side is still flippin hot, at home I'm stting with dlink2500u bridged to an smc wireless N router and they run much cooler, wonder why the heat problem?

That heat issue is would worry me. I stay in Durban and we all know what it gets like in summer.

I'm on my third netgear adsl router, never had a f/w issue?

May I ask why you're on your third NG router? :D

Their consumer products have a range of issues, firmware is just one of them. Ever tried updating your firmware, only to discover that you've lost previously available functionality? Not only that, but NG don't even address these complaints when they're made on their own forum.

Another issue with some of their consumer products is that they will not work unless you install their software, which appears to have been written by an 8-year old. For somebody who wants to customise their network to their needs, pressing Next on each screen makes it a little irritating.

For home routers I would suggest a D-link, Linksys (effectively Cisco) or Billion. Spend the extra cash because you do get what you pay for.

Changed my mind - there's nothing special about netgear, choose another brand bud!

If I hold my hand there it becomes uncomfortable after a few minutes, that cant be right?

I'm going to hijack this since the original poster has been helped and there is no need for a new thread.

I need a Wifi ADSL router that is capable of running 3rd party firmware if necessary (DD-WRT / OPEN-WRT / GARGOYLE / TOMATO ETC).

I've been thinking of the Netgear DG834G or the Dlink 2640U - Any alternatives to those or any better D-link I can grab (I've never owned a D-link so I don't know).

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks
J

jsheed_sa, DD-WRT will never support any ADSL routers. I'm not sure if you would be able to run 3rd-party firmware on the D-Link routers. All of the D-Link models on the OpenWRT page are still in "Work in Progress" state.
If you want to do specialized routing/monitoring/firewall setups, then simply add a MikroTik RB750. The RB750 has 5x 100Mbps Ethernet ports and is available at Scoop Distributions for R325 (excl VAT). Even though it doesn't have WiFi, you should still be able to route the WiFi traffic coming from your ADSL router. It might take you a while to set it up, but using the WinBox GUI tool, it should go much faster.

Dlink 2640U is a nice router, although it doesn't have Wireless N or 1Gbps Ethernet support. You can get a TP-Link W8960N thats got Wireless N support for slightly more (R599 ex VAT).

Still wanting bit more advice on more routers, so don't totally take over this thread!

Guys, I'm looking more model specific. Not just brands. What are you currently using, what was price, where from and is it worth it?

I lose about 2 routers a year due to lightning. Or rather lighting surges over the phone line. I do have lightning/surge protectors and I unplug during storms (when I'm there), but I still lose a couple every year. Its a pain in the whatsit, but at least I always have the latest tech. :-/

I am using this netgear router. I have been checking the temp since Hemps pointed it out, and while its hotter than the switch next to it, its not much hotter than the d-link I have at the office.
I paid about R1200 for the Netgear from Matrix in Jan. I can't remember when or where I bought the d-link.

Thx Pada.

Whats the TP-Link like? I have managed to get my TPLink AP to run Open-wrt before so I know they're hackable. Its the TL-WR941N unit.

Would you recommend the TP-Link over the D-link 2640u or something like the Netgear DG834G?

Thx
J
