ADSL Router Advise

Still wanting bit more advice on more routers, so don't totally take over this thread!

Guys, I'm looking more model specific. Not just brands. What are you currently using, what was price, where from and is it worth it?

You're going to have to stretch your budget a bit if you want a decent wifi router, as R650 won't really get you anything impressive.

I got a Billion 7300G (~R900) for my gf and it's a good router. Wifi performance is about the same as the Netgear DG834's, which is average. If you want great wireless performance then you'll need a router that supports 802.11N. I have the Billion 7300N (~R1300) and the wifi performance is impressive, providing coverage throughout a double-storey house.

The only reason that I recommend Billion is that it will easily allow you to do half-bridge (one account set on the router as the default account, with the option to dial into another account from your machine if you wish).

Thanks smooth. I kinda figured I would have to spend a bit more then what I was looking at at first. Just wanted to see if there any decent deals out there I was missing.
Saying that, will start sticking money away now and see what happens. Did find this gigabit router which I would consider if get I wait longer then expected.

Edit: Saw this also, but worried as to why they would offer a 802.11N for so cheap?

D-Link routers can also do half-bridging, but it might be non-trivial to get it working: ie. add both a PPPoE account and a Bridge as WAN interfaces.
I'm not sure if that is necessary with the newer D-Link routers though.

Some of the more expensive routers also provide you with USB interface(s) that can be used for NAS (Network Attached Storage). Like the TP-LINK WR1043ND 300Mbps Ultimate Wireless N Gigabit Router for R599 (ex VAT) has 5x 1Gbps Ethernet (4x LAN, 1x WAN), Wireless N & USB for NAS. Just note that it's NOT an ADSL router!
It would still be cheaper to get one of those and chain it with a cheap ADSL2+ router like the D-Link DSL-2500U (available for like R250 incl VAT).

Update:

I went for the TP-Link TD8840 4 port ADSL router - only R285 with VAT - A steal. (Tp-Link are cheap but sturdy - I already have an AP of their's)

I'm going to connect that to my TP-Link WR941N AP and run Open-WRT on the WR941N - should be fun trying to setup the custom firmware again.

Thanks for all the help.

is it possible

HI.
Please , if somebody can clarify / redirect for me .

If i'm having a DSL Modem with 802.11 N router and a laptop with a build in 802.11 N do I still need to plug the laptop and modem with the Ethernet cable in order to access the internet or I can do it wirelesly ?

I'm asking because my telephone jack is very far from my "office" - where the computer is ... and the telcom technicians refused to move it because they are not allowed to go to the ceiling .

So I want to plug the modem /router to the jack and then connect to it wirelessly.

Domoreto, there should be no difference in connecting to your DSL modem via cable or via wireless N. The only issues with wireless should be the wireless range and security measures.

Thx.

You may initially need to use the ethernet cable to setup your router (depending on brand) but after that you can just use straight wireless.
