Hi guys :)

I've had this issue with the past 3 routers and I've come to the realisation that it's not the router. My ADSL connection syncs up at anywhere between 900kbps down and 2000kbps down instead of the 4000mbps down that I used to get.

What could be causing this (aside from the router) and how do I get it fixed? Telkom has been here and says there's no noise on the line. Maybe there's something else they can do to fix this?

Wow, I wish I had a 4000mbps connection ;)

Could you please post your line attenuation, SNR margins and sync speeds here?

My guess is that you live too far from the exchange and that you have a crappy Netgear ADSL modem.

LOL! Sorry! 4Mbps. Had a long week!

Thing is, I haven't moved so it can't be distance to the exchange because it synced at 4Mbps before. And it's not Netgear it's Billion. I had the 7402 before and now have the 7402X, both of which are excellent so I'm thinking that something else must be up.

Line Attenuation(Upstream) 22.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 39.5 dB
SNR Margin(Upstream) 7 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 6.0 dB

Thanks for your help!

SNR Margin(Upstream) 7 dB, you need 12 at least, you need log problem there is something wrong with your line, or something static near the line.

Your attennuation figures (distance from exchange) are fine. The reason you're getting bad sync is because of your really low noise MARGINS. Try unplugging everything from that ADSL phone line except the modem itself (that means no filters whatsoever, either), and then reboot the modem and see if the noise margin improves (is higher). If that doesn't work, try contact Telkom - ideally they need to replace the cable from the pole to demarc with twisted pair cable for that portion, which will help alleviate noise. I actually have the same problem, but am struggling to get Telkom to replace the inferior cable

Thanks guys :) I thought something along those lines. I need to move this particular line from outside, inside. So I've ordered a new line which should fix the problems. So now it's just a waiting game I guess.

Another Q: Telkom says my new line will be ADSL-ready because it's at the same address, in your experience, is this usually the case or what I talking to a numbnut?

Thanks!

Can you check if your ADSL is using ADSL2+ or G.Dmt modulation? If it is using ADSL2+, try G.Dmt modulation instead.

Otherwise, try borrowing someone's D-Link/Marconi/Siemens router and see if they don't provide a more stable connection.
I've never used a Billion router myself, so I can't exactly say how good they are compared to the others, but I think they are better than the Netgears :)

Yep it's using G.Dmt. Telkom was here and did some testing, etc. They disconnected one of the extensions we weren't using and changed our DSLAM port(?) we're on at the exchange. Seems stable enough but it looks like someone requested us to be moved to 2Mbps due to previous issues we've had so now I need to call and ask to be put back on 4Mbps.
