ADSL Router setup - Revised Pleeaase!!

I have a request as I am battling with my Telkom Ethernet 4port Router setup.

I am using Terminal Services and need users to be able to login to my Win2003 Server via port 3389.

Simple question from anyone of the experts please - I would REALLY :D appreciate a step by step guide from someone to enable to setup the correct port forwarding on the router.

The techie that came to setup our software only knew "PAT" and since the new Telkomonopoly Ethernet 4port Router doesn't have this setting - he tends to be a bit lost.

AT the moment, the modem is as it came out of the box. This is the new version 2 with the following:
Firmware Version: CX82xxx_4.1.0.9
Customer Software Version: 4.1.0.9_F2_MAR_01

There is no mention of PAT in this router which previous posts refer to and hence my query for setting up port forwarding

Problem solved

Here's a titbit for the users with the new Telkom ADSL 4 port router.

After much hair tearing and scouring the internet for advice, managed to come up with the solution (needless to say with no help from Telkomonopoly or MarconiMacaroni).

Port forwarding on the new router is not PAT - its called: VIRTUAL SERVER CONFIGURATION

ID Public Port - Start Public Port - End Private Port Port Type Host IP Address
1 3389 3389 3389 TCP ***.***.**.**(deleted for obvious reasons)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TCP
UDP

Settings need to be saved to Flash and the system needs to be rebooted for changes to take effect.
The maximum number of entries above is 20. The maximum number of mapped ports is 20

Hope this helps the newbies like me out there

Jeez ... what a piece of **** !!!.
My netgear does these things on the fly while I am surfing without rebooting.

I really dunno why people still buy this Telkom labeled mediocre crap modems.
 
Clock, If I may ask you, the IP that you use (blocked out), is this your internal IP?

Reason I ask this, is I tried to use this technology to get VPN going, but it did not do the port-forwarding, as far as I could find.

ps - If anyone knows, how do you set the TIMESERVER to reflect the correct time/date in the LOG details? I have tried everything, but only get some 1970 date...
 
I have one of the telkom labeled routers and it works like a dream, not a single problem. Maybe it is something you have done???

I doubt it...
One of the best quotes I ever heard from a Telkom Tech...

Tech: "Do yourself a favour, Get the Marconi Modem, that way at least when you phone in they will not be able to tell you its your modem at fault, Just dont get the Ethernet modem they dont work.. in fact dont get the USB Modem either..."

Me: "HHHMmmmm so what choice do I have, you only supply those two?

Tech: "My point exactly, Never said they would work, only that the call centre wont say its your modem if you get it!!!!!"
 
Hi are there any tweaks for The telkom adsl router modem.....????
or is it best to leave the default settings???

try changing the MTU and MRU..

these are the maximum amount of data that can be recieved adn sent in a packet.. so by increasing it you would increase the speed of your router.. but dont adjust it too high as you wil find loading pages may be slightly slower...

enter the 'bios' of the router and under WAN config adjust the values... :o

or simply download TZ Connection Booster and it will automatically adjust your registry values... only do this if you have a USB modem (not sure about ethernet modem) as it will not adjust the Transmission Unit value of the router :eek:

Still not getting the port forwarding

I have setup the port forwarding on my Telkom router, but it still doesn't seem to work. I used the virtual server section as suggested above. Any ideas what else I should be looking out for, changing, etc?

If your personal firewall software on your PC is setup decently, why not try forward all ports to your PC and then test is Terminal Services works, if youre able to connect then perhaps, you have the wrong port (although 3389 is the std port to use).
 
I understand that I must go into the VIRTUAL SERVER CONFIGURATION
to set up port forwarding & inputing the port numbers re:

Like cyber7 I don't understand what ip address to use.
Is it the internal ip address of the router or the ip address of the PC that needs the port opened on?

Yoy have to insert the local IP address, e.g. 10.0.0.11 or 192.168.1.3 (or whatever you assigned to the PC, phone or other device...)
 
plz teach me how i will be using mtn sim and london sim in nigeria through computer conversion
 
Firewall

Hi there,

I'm not an expert but have the following to say:
Are you perhaps running a firewall such as Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) with your Windows 2003 Server?

If you are, your must ensure that you setup a protocol rule that allows TCP Port 3389 traffic in both directions, at all times, and for all clients. (You can make it more restrictive later on)

Since your NAT/LAT table already passes the traffic between your ADSL router IP, and your internal NIC, the Virtual Server Config (aka PAT) must have your INTERNAL
IP address defined.

Also, the ADSL router/modem might have it's own firewall built in. Ensure that you allow all traffic to be passed through the modem's firewall.

Ja, well, no fine

I, too, am battling with vpn connection via a Telkom (Marconi) ADSL 4-port ethernet.

Everything else that I have asked the damn thing to do, works. I have configured it to PAT ("virtual server") port 25 to my mail server (yes, the IP address you enter here is the host that must see the incoming protocol connection) and incoming mail works just fine & dandy. Outgoing too.

Now I have also configured PAT on port 1723 TCP (pptp, the VPN protocol supported natively by Windows clients). Also went to the "firewall" configuration and allowed incoming AND outgoing traffic to / from the same server, port 1723, from / to ANY address, any port.

When I try to connect a vpn session, the client quickly goes past the "connecting to host" stage, then sits on "verifying user name and password". On the server, I go into Routing and Remote Access, and the first PPtP port condition changes from "listening" to "authenticating" until eventually the client times out.

What gives? Are there maybe more port(s) that must be PATted in addition to TCP 1723? (I have successfully connected directly to the same server from the inside network, so it's not an issue with RRAS).

On the same premises (separate network) I have another ADSL connection using a Netgear router, and it works fine. I notice on the Netgear there is no option in the Port Translation to select protocol, so I suppose it must be forwarding both TCP and UDP (or maybe all protocols...), but setting up both on the Marconi didn't help either. And on the Marconi you can't translate ALL ports, there is a limit of 20 discrete settings; and when trying to put in a range of ports you still have to pick a single destination port. And it doesn't save the entry anyway.

I also (I've spent a lot of time on this!) changed the Firewall rule (mentioned above) to allow incoming port 1723 ALL protocols, same outgoing - no effect. But I don't have any rules allowing port 25 in or out, and mail still works fine, so I doubt this is in any way effective anyhow.

Of course, all these settings changes that require save-reboot (a) take time and (b) inevitably lead to new a IP every now and again, which means you have to wait a further couple of minutes for DNS changes to update... <AAAAAaaarrrgghhhhhh>
