ADSL Rumours....

I think 384 will be done away with but 512 will remain as basic entry level to ADSL - it's still that way overseas in the UK etc.

512kbps, 1mb, 4mb.... bring on 8mb? Now we're talking.

I see no reason for them not to introduce something like 8mb - ok sure it'll only be available to people really close to their DSLAMs but why not? As far as I understand it Telkom's entire national ADSL cloud is linked by super high-speed fibre, I don't see that getting congested too easily, and sure our international downloads will still creep along at 50kb/s but at least we can 'say' we've got 8mb :) And I'd like to download locally at 800kb/s.

Ah baby steps guys... we'll get there.

id prefer 512k but uncapped.......or even capped internatioanl but uncapped local

I would even settle for 384 if it is uncapped!

telkom are morons, bunch of money hungry retards, that want to upgrade their mercs every 6 months with our money ...

I can't utilise even my 384 kbps line properly due to the 3 gig cap ... I can use the entire cap in a single day! why the hell I need 1 or 4 mbps! telkom can stick those up their arses!

Also, how would Telkom be able to sustain all the users using either a 1M or 4M line?

Interesting thing...My brother works for a company called Sentronics...anyway recently he went to Johannesburg for business marketing. Anyway next to their little Sentronics hut there was dear ol' Telkom. They had a real fiber optic cable laid with a 20MB line. When my brother asked when will this be available for the public they replied: "It's for the future to come." In other words they have the technologies to greater speeds but they are sucking as much money out of us as possible by raising the speeds very slowly. Because if we had already had 20MB lines then a 4MB or 1MB would be damn darn cheap...so next we'll probably see 8MB over the next 3 years or so if we're very lucky. Then another 5 years for them to double that. :o By that time we might have T3 technologies

Why do you suppose Nvidia advertises programming posts in the Delhi times, but not anywhere in SA?
Even though India have poor sanitation and basic services, anyone knows their IT infrastructure and relations with the US make them a fertile market for outsourcing. Who wants to hire a South African with our monthly costs just to connect to the internet.

SA Slides further and further into the third world trade wise... despite our infrastructure having higher potential.

Well rumour or not, Telkom would be thinking of getting everyone to 1024K or upto 4mbit.

Reason :
1.IPTV services (more money to make

2.ISP accounts (if you got capped within' 2 days or a week, u will buy another account or topup, or maybe even buy bigger sized cap each month as a standard maybe 10gig or so)
Any iptv service from telkom would probably run independently from your day to day adsl service. You could still have IPTV and a 384 connection - I go so far as to say that some people wanting iptv might have to accept slower adsl speeds from telkom.

As far as the ISP accounts goes why havent they done it already then - the pricing model has been in place for a year now.

Also!!
“Telkom does not have the equipment to differentiate between International and Local traffic”.

so let me get this right, before there was hard capping they COULD differentiate local and int'l, but now they can't? "Z0MG SOMEONE ARE STOLED TELKOM's DIFFERENTIATION EQUIPMENTS!"

I am almost positive that the reason programming posts are going the eastern route is NOT because of the connectivity they have, but the fact that India is a country of programmers, some of the best! available.

I think more to the truth would be that India is beating SA out in terms of major Call Centre contracts due to there connectivity, and cheap labour.

Agree ? :p

- plenty
