I have just moved into a security complex and will shortly be engaging in the process of applying for ADSL once Telkom have activated the line. Our telephone line is linked to the intercom system at the electronic gate so visitors dial through to us.

My question is this... will I still be eligible for self install? Any of you had similar experiences living in a complex with the intercom and telephone system integrated. I worrry that a technician may be required to do some rewiring.

I actually picked up a "marconi" SSID the other day so I'm hopeful that at least one person here has ADSL and is using Telkom's router.

Your thoughts please.

Thanks!

The intercom isn't a problem - its just a standard phone line with nothing strange for the technician to contend with & no re-wiring required. So self-install should be fine. (I've done one here, same setup...)

Hey if I rented a house and the house came with a prepaid line, how do I get adsl? Since the line isnt under my name?

Not possible you need to be a post paid subscriber to add ADSL to your line. It is somewhere in the Telkom terms and conditions.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! Just received word from a friend in a security complex with an intercom/telephone system similar to mine. Apparently, he was able to do the self install. So there is hope.

BTW, the line MUST be postpaid. God only knows why.

someone on the forum here mentioned that the self installs have been terminated - you could only apply for them until the 31st May. Is this still the case?

I think they extended it. Why on earth would they terminate it, it doesn't make sense. By having SI they take the work load off their techies, all the techie needs to do is change a jumper and boom you have ADSL, the customer does most of the setup so it's retarded if they even think of canning it.

afaik, self installs are still avail. even the free router deal on signup has been extended until end of june... according to telkom's 10219 service.

feo, is it possible to buy additional prepaid gigs from webafrica and use it on the do1 package? i.e. does telkom have full control of the line?

WA prepaid gigs work on a 'do' line. Haven't had a chance to try it myself but will do so later in the month. If you really need me to check then PM a prepaid username/pass and I'll check if it works.

Other users have reported that it DOES work...;)

I've used my prepaid on a 'do' line without issue

Yeah, they were telling people that the free wifi router with SIO would not be available anymore, but if extended now, well then it was Telkom up to its usual lies to grab as many customers as possible before Neotel comes on the scene...
