Guys,

Please clarify the following for me as I seem to be getting different information between Cybersmart and Telkom.

I have a prepaid phone with Telkom, and I want ADSL setup on it and I’m interested on the Cybersmart Weekender Basic package which includes circuit rental, now to my dilemma, what will I have to pay Telkom should I have the above mentioned package setup for me??

Cybersmart – They Informed me I will not be paying Telkom anything as the circuit price is already covered in my package, I will only need to pay Telkom for the calls made on my line.

Telkom – Informed me I will still need to pay them a rental fee of R130 and any outgoing calls amounts, the ADSL will be setup on top of the analog line, hence I still need to pay them R130 for its rental, the circuit and data will be paid to my ISP.

Guys please help in clarifying the above as I need to know how much I should expect to pay on monthly basis.

Thanks
Meli,

They are both right.

You won't need to pay telkom for the ADSL circuit which is what Cybersmart are telling you but you will need to change your line across from a prepaid which is where the R130 line rental comes in. Telkom don't allow ADSL on prepaid lines. Normally ADSL accounts consist of the following:

1) Telkom analog line rental
2) ADSL Circuit Fee
3) ISP Internet usage (eg 3GB's)

The cybersmart package includes 2 and 3 but you still need to pay telkom for 1.

Hi mjmapi.

In South Africa ADSL consists of 3 components:

1 - Analog line rental from Telkom for around R130 per month. You must have this, you cannot get around it, and you can only get it from Telkom.

2 - ADSL Line. A bit of a misinterpretation of the truth as you already pay for your analog line, but basically you pay Telkom again for the same line, only this time you can get ADSL access over it at 384k, 512k or 4096k. You can get this line from Telkom, or from an ISP.

3 - Data cap. This is where you choose how much data you want to use. You can get this either from Telkom via Telkom Internet, or from an ISP like Cybersmart.

What Cybersmart is trying to say is you only pay for your voice line and calls made from your voice line to Telkom. The second and third component you pay for via Cybersmart.

Hope that helps.

There are 3 costs involved

1) Normal telkom analogue line rental (plus call costs if you do use it for making calls)
2) ADSL Circuit fee ( included in the cybersmart complete package)
3) ISP charges (whichever data package you choose from cybersmart)

So basically you pay telkom for the line and cybersmart for the other 2

You Can't run ADSL on a prepaid line. I also had to switch over to a normal monthly plan to be able to get an ADSL line. Definitely worth it !! :)
