ADSL speed race

telkom will most likely hire a few cats.....

Seriously! Fruitless task, isn't in the league of the flying to hong kong example.
Ok look i can bye a 1TB hdd and fill it with what ever and fly via a plane to cpt from jhb, and get this i can do it faster than the internet in south africa.

Think the point is more to prove that since the Hong Kong venture, nothing has really changed dramatically with broadband in South Africa

Real-life experience comparing the SA Post office with internet banking:
In 2002 an attorney transferred funds from an ABSA account to my Standard Bank account. She printed the proof of the transaction and sent it with some other documentation by normal mail from Malelane to Pretoria. All of his happened on a Monday. I received the letter on Wednesday, but the funds only reflected in my account the Friday morning.

Winston has more than a fair chance I reckon.

For satirical purposes let's even the playing field... allow Telkom install a point-to-point long haul microwave link from the start to finish point. If Winston crosses the signal path he gets fried! And they can give him a 64Gb flash disk. And he can pray for a tail wind...

//there probably is a MW link between Howick and Gillits - they just need to reconfigure the circuit to be used!!!

This is awesome, absolutely awesome.
They're not trying to prove a point, they just want to be yet another voice in the wilderness crying out: Why oh why does it have to be so slow and expensive?
But in a fun way.
:) :D :p

Winston & Nelson

Will the data on the flash drive be encrypted ???

Cannot have the data falling into enemy hands :D

Anyone know where the release is taking place  need to take my stop watch and go and watch

I know JUST the spot in Howick for an awesome departure - pity they are talking about land lines
:erm:;)SO passe

Line of sight from the MTN tower via microwave link. With a dedicated tap I will send the 4Gb to DBN in about a minute.:D

MW

So this company is responsible for so many irritating telemarketing calls for stupid SOS products?

I love that there are always nay-sayers..

Regardless of being able to force a result here or not.. the fact that it is faster to transfer something as small as 4GB file, not a 64GB or 1TB, but a 4GB file via carrier pigeon rather than telkom is appalling.

Natal Witness headline on Saturday. "Endangered Blue & Green Sparrow Hawk targets weighed down Pigeon near Hilton."

This reminds me of a past event - in April 1990, RFC 1149 was published as an April Fool's joke, describing a protocol called "IP over Avian Carriers". Yes, you guessed it, it described sending IP packets via carrier pigeon.

In 2001, the Bergen Linux user group successfully implemented IPoAC - they sent nine ping requests via carrier pigeon over a distance of around 5km, and received four packets with latency varying between 3,200,000ms and 6,300,000ms. You can read about their effort here.

does work just a big lagg

Haha I played golf in Hillcrest with one of these guys recently... didn't realise they had such an innovative viral marketing campaign... thing is I just checked their website and it has exceeded it's bandwidth... so their site is down.
