I hope someone can assist. Please bear with me as this is an issue someone I know has so I am providing the information second hand.

The person has just had ADSL installed. They were unable to sync until they unplugged all their phone lines and then the router synced and they were online. They left it this way overnight but then when they tried to plug the phones in this morning the router would not sync again.

The first thing I suggested was making sure they had filters on all the lines. They do. Apparently the main connection does not have a filter but it has a splitter with a "power supply". Not sure of Telkom's set up so not sure what this is.

They even tried only plugging the router into this main connection and then one other telephone elsewhere with a filter fitted and immediately the router was not syncing. Teh only way they can use the ADSL is if they unplug all phones.

Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? I have seen mention of alarm systems causing issues but surely if this were the problem it would mean the router would not sync even with all the physical phones pulled out?

That most definately sounds like a filter issue... either the filter is broken or there's some messed up wiring.

Those ADSL filters are not very robust - vulnerable to electrical spikes - they can be damaged so you can still make a phone call but the line is shorted out so other devices incl the ADSL router can't connect. Go to a Telkom shop and get new ones.

how many phones are connected to the same phone line with filters?

As mentioned this was a brand new installation so the filters were new. Also the person in question tried one of the three individual phones connected alone with a filter at a time and as soon as one was connected the ADSL router would not sync.

Three. Kitchen, lounge and bedroom. But as stated above the person tried disconnecting all of them and then connecting one at a time but no matter which one was plugged in the router would not sync until unplugged.

So are you guys all convinced it must be a filter issue? I even made sure to ask the person to make sure the filters were plugged in the right way around :)
