So people are doing construction and they moved a cord that comes from the telephone line that carries the signal. The result is that my ADSL is super slow, and syncs slowly.

The cord is black and has little wires in it, but only one is connected, the rest are just hanging out freely.

Is there anything I can do to fix it or must I try to get Telkom to come?

Get Telkom out. They might replace it.

Dial tone, do you have it on your phone? there should be two wires connected, how many wires are not connected? one of them is you missing wire, you can connect each of them at the time and the one that will give dial tone is the one, and your adsl will be blazing fast again. Happy troubleshooting.

I have logged a fault.

This is what the cord looks like:

There is no dial tone. It looks like a green wire connecting to a brown wire.

Simple then, that black wire has four wires in it, only one connected, out of the remaining 3 one of them is your missing wire, if you look at them closely you can see which wire came loose, simply connect the wire and you good to go, I hope there is enough slack in the wires for you to be able to work on them.

Do log a fault with Telkom to come and fix that wire properly but at least you will have service while you waiting.

*Edit* It also look like you have an extension in your house, you also have to connect those wires which should be the remaining two after you have located the other wire.

How do I know which colours to connect to what?

And also, can it shock me?

If only people adhered to colour codes, it would be so easy, I don't know whether Telkom did in this case. Its on a few wires so it should not be a mission.

First leave the connected wire as it is and take the one wire protruding from that connecter (can't see the colour from the pic) and connect it to any wire on the black cable coming from the pole, go into the house and check for dial tone, if you don't disconnect it and connect it to the other wire on the black cable and go check for dial tone, repeat the same process until you get dial tone.

Next for you extension, take the two wire from the connecter( from the white wire) and connect it to the two remaining wires on the black cable, it does not matter which one is connected to which, just make sure those two wires from the white cable are connected to the two from the black cable then go and check dial tone on your extension.

I hope you are fully cognizant with the risk of working at heights and all the risks associated with doing a job that you are not trained for, if you are not fully confident its just better and safer to wait for Telkom.

I did it, thank you!

Pretty rudimental fix, but will still get Telkom in to do it properly.
