Hi

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a drop in Sync Speed recently?

I am in East London and had no ADSL for most of yesterday.

My router re-connected at about 20:00 last night. But now my sync speed is 2048/512 (SNR 38) instead of 4096/384 (SNR 27). I tried restarting the router several times as well to correct this but no luck. (Billion 5102 Router)

I have had no issues syncing over the last few months, so something else must be going on. TELKOM...

Cheers

I'm also in East London. No trouble here, but i guess that might be because i only have a 384 line to start with :D

Still on 4mb. I live in Jozi, I'm connected to the Linden Exchange (Near Melville/Cresta).

Wonder if its just you or if everyone is gonna go back to 1mb?

I am also still on 4mb. I am in JHB also on Linden exchange.

Synching and disconnects

Randburg exchange.

Loss of sysnchronization plenty (I get tired of trying to keep score)
LCP dropping plenty.

connected at 3712/384.

Netgear DG834G v3 battling to synch.

I am now going to phone Telkom to see if my connect speed can be set lower.

Connect Speed Reduced

After much haggling, Sybil on 0800 375 375, got hold of a colleague in "Testing" and had my connect speed set to what I requested - 3072/384.

It now remains to be seen whether this will reduce the loss of synchronization and LCP drops. If it does, then I will try to have the connect speed increased by 128kbps at a time until such time as the bad symptoms reappear.

Hmmm, very interesting. I'm experiencing exactly the same on my 4MB line (I'm living in Moreleta Park, Pretoria). I first realised that my international speed is horrible, getting between 5KB and 15KB/s on any site.

So I checked my router and saw that the download link speed was at half of what it should be, 2040 or something, it also picked up quite a few CRC errors, together with loss of signals. So I phoned Telkom, got transfered to quite a helpfull guy called Sisco (like the router), or Cybil. He reset my connection at the exchange, and my router link speed went back up to 4096. Ooh, I thought, now it's fixed, but after trying some internation downloads from various sites, the download rate was just as bad as before. The local Telkom speed test still gets me 400KB/s though.

So the guy tells me to use an alternative Telkom proxy. Now things are running a bit better, but still not what it should be. Bloody weird I tell ya. :(

Yeah, I actually made a joke with the guy. Me: "Cisco, as in Cisco router?", and he said yes, so yeah, maybe this guy was born a network admin? :)

Update

Well, my router shows I am syncing at 4096/384 again but speedtests put me at 446.7kbps (512K) I have had the so called "up to 4Mbit" account since the trial started and it used to work great.

It has been running at 1/8th bandwidth since the 26th February. I have phoned TELKOM numerous times and have a reference number but no luck so far in getting this resolved...sigh

this may seem like a stupid question but if i may ask ..... how do i go about seeing as to how my line is syncing ?

am using a billion 7300

thanks

Telkom service

I logged a problem on 0800373375 on 20 Feb regarding loss of synchronisation and LCP going down.

Logged the problem on hellopeter 23 Feb and again on 6 Mar.

Lady phoned me yesterday and went thru usual diagnostic tests and then had a technician phone me. He said that he would check my circuit commencing at the Randburg exchange and arranged to come to my house today.

He replaced the wall jack (which came out of the ark) with a modern one, and then proceeded to check my circuit performance using his modem and notebook. He then went to check the Telkom distribution point which feeds the pole which feeds the house.

Bottom line? He rewired my circuit at the distribution point.

Result?
Noise margin was 7/12
Noise margin now 11-13/13

Line attenuation was 52/15.5
Line attenuation now 39/10

Download speed was ±89 KB/sec
Download speed now 434 KB/sec

Netgear DG834GT log used to fill up and keep dropping off entries as it added new ones
Netgear log empty except for administrator log-ons.

Blood pressure was very high
Blood pressure now normal

Was I lucky? or was I lucky?

Yes - I was lucky to have the guy that came to the house doing the diagnostics and repair. He really knew what he was doing. Very well done.

Hi Mze, unfortunately the problem that the rest of us are experiencing are most probably not the same as yours. The "temporary" proxy I've been using for more than a month now at least gives me between 512Kb and 2Mb's per second. If I don't use the proxy it goes down to about 10Kb/s. :( It's a real pain in the butt actually.

To answer your question, I have this information in the "Status" window when I log into my router. So for me, it will be http://192.168.0.254 (use YOUR routers IP Address) through the web browser and then enter: username and password.

It actually defaults to the status window on my router when logging in and this gives a basic overview of Sync Speeds, SNR and Line Attenuation.
