Over the last month or so, I've noticed the following problem.

Whenever someone picks up the telephone handset, whether ringing or not, my ADSL connection dies. After about 30 seconds, it resumes as normal. Similarly, putting the telephone handset does again causes the same problem. Inbetween picking up and putting down the handset, there is no problem.

It's getting pretty annoying. Any suggestions how to solve this?

Are you using a filter on your telephone

A wild guess here.

Do you have the ADSL filter in place?

And if you are using a filter, it might be damaged.

I had a simular problem some time ago. After a few weeks of Telkom Techs checking things out, we replaced the filter and the problem was solved. With the recent lightning storms around SA. Its possible the filter is no longer working like it should

Yes, got a filter. Also tried a spare. No luck.

Wild guess ahead! ...

The filter is meant to remove noise from the line - both ways (am I correct?).
It may be that the phone is damaged, and is surging the line when picked up - worth a try to use another phone just to be sure.

Thanks, M. I thought you might be right since we changed the phone recently. While trying the old phone it seemed to be working, but now the other is working too. We had just called the Telkom helpline and they were going to check things on their side, so maybe the found something and fixed. Whatever the case, it seems to be working now.

Thanks for help, guys.

Glad you came right! One thing to look out for as well, is lightning protectors. My line was completely dead a while back, and I traced it to a faulty protector. These protectors may also cause feedback (who know what can happen with faulty equipment!)

@sent: After careful analysis I have discovered that you have a large Telkom in your phone. Extermination is the only option.

lmao

Ain't that one of all of us biggest headache?

You know HellTel, it often is. I've found with the ones that come into my house that a quick, confident spray of Doom usually does the trick. You have to keep them down though. Otherwise before you know it, your whole house is over-run.
