ADSL Traffic Splitting

Great article by Tony. It will be great if the decrease in international bandwidth rates will result in ‘blended bandwidth’ usage limit increases, which in turn will mean that traffic splitting can give local ADSL users a high usage limit experience on a fair monthly budget.

pathetic attempt at progress, pull the other one:(

I agree, it's desperate measures, but it's a positive article and is a great introduction to those who never knew they were missing out - especially the occasional visitor who might not otherwise venture into the forums. Kudos to the guys on a well written article, and echoing above sentiments - Kudos to GC and Ant1body on their enormous contributions. I have used both solutions for years now and am very grateful. Ant1body - hows about (even a commercial) Vista compatible release of your SW? Or is that available?

GC, I think you should have a paypal donation in your sig, or even better, MyBB should have the odd donation banner for these guys as great contributors to the forum and community... I'd like to suggest semi-formalising the user base of these tools - a users list or email subscription (anonymity OK for public view) - to see just how many of us are adopting them... I proudly advocate for their use.... and I'd like to see more articles like this one promoting them.

I heard that Route Sentry doesn't work on XP?

Works fine on XP - it's Vista that is the problem AFAIK.
Oh, and GuileX - forget the one carrytig the screwdriver, its the one constantly dropping the screwdriver that bugs me...

oh yeah informative for average joe soap .... hardly a news worth writing about..

Only important question that was not asked in this article is :

Why is it that ISP's are not doing this on behalf of joe average ?

That my friend is worth writing about and asking questions!

I have a 4 Mbps ADSL line and have FNB Connect as an ISP. They have an autotop function that is linked to my FNB bank account, so if I am downloading and my prepaid account hits a certain threshold (e.g R20), I automatically top up with R70 (1 GB of data). Works very well, especially since it is unshaped...

ISP's can do this on behalf of the client. Looks at Verizon / MTN Business Usage stats for ADSL. Yup sure can on this we are actually charged different rates for Local and International. Difference being thought that with these accounts you pay for what you have used.

What I am saying is they will show me: you used 5GB local @ R10 so that is R50 and you used 2GB International @ R 60 so that is R120. Which would then be R 170 total.

You might be missing the point of the SW that is being referred to in the article.

out of interest it's quite easy to do the same with pretty much any cisco router that has embedded ADSL or pppoe.

One config that I'm running uses a cisco 1841 with a ESW4 to hook up to 4 ADSL's and run bandwidth over all 4, with the first split to break local/international over different pipes and the second is to allow squid to use different outgoing IP addresses which are then diverted to each ADSL link by the cisco box.

basically poor man's best attempt at fishbone.

D

I still think it stupid that we have to do this. They could do the routing inhouse like they used to when ADSL was new. Why should we even be charged for local bandwidth?

:p ill remember that.

Then its my router that cant be configured for bridge mode.

Routesentry works fine on Vista and WIN 7 Beta have been using this solution for more than 2 years it is actual easier to setup in vista than it is in win xp.

Ok, cool - would be great to have a sticky for the instructions somewhere - AFAIK you need to install an add-on for XP and Vista not? Something to do with multiple PPPOE connections...

Yeah, I think we all do think it's stupid that we have to resort to these measures... I don't think these measures and efforts are stupid under the circumstances though... what I am saying is the article hilights the positive contribution forumites of MyBB - likely some of the only positive contributions to broadband in SA. It's not the fault of the contributors that we are in this mess or indeed in their power to do anything about it. BB Frustrations aside, this is a positive article IMO.
