ADSL: Uncapped versus capped

Back to the topic. Uncapped offers you piece of mind. In my house we have 3 computers just updating windows can use up to 20% of our cap, hell even updating software could be a problem. last month one of the computers crashed and redownloading the firewall, antivirus and updating the antivirus and re updating windows had killed my cap in 12 days. That meant 18 days of no interenet for me. With uncapped you never have to worry bout dat happening again

Füçk MWEB.

Unless they're giving it away for free they will never see my money. I'd rather have internetlessness.

It's very obvious that they are trying hard to erase the competition and I can assure you that when most of the competition is gone they'll be onto re-pricing just like their evil cousins DSTV.

So far no problem with Mweb, think I made the right choice. Torrents download anything from 50Kb/s to 70Kb/s during peak on my 4mb adsl, 170kb/s during off peak. Loosing interest in downloading complete internet now, just download when I need it - guess that's what they want anyway.

Thanks for that, uchoose. If those speeds are indicative of what the Mweb account's capabilities are, then I think I'll stick to unshaped capped for now. That's less than half what I'm getting

How much does it cost for unshaped? I need about 100GB per month, does it work out reasonable price wise?

Uchoose - +10 , add to that that your link might only support a 1mb line it is really not too bad, so buy 1 gig unshaped through SAOL and use it when you need it, it will cost you a full R29.

Hell, you can even buy 3 gig with the uncapped and will still be able to down;oad enough movies for a year.

Check out the new Cybersmart pricing. You may need a bit more than their standard package (10Gb with 10x weekender) if you wanna do 100GB and still have bandwidth left for normal surfing, so I'd email them and ask if they can sort you out with something a bit bigger. (incidentally, that 10GB + Weekender on a 4mb line is only R 799, full speed, no shaping/throttling, not a bad price at all).

Does that price include the line rental? Because line rental through Isat is R 371 for a 4mb line, that leaves R 430 for bandwidth. Is the weekender uncapped with Cybersmart?

That R799 does include 4mb line rental. It's not uncapped over the weekend, it's 10x cap (so whatever u use is divided by 10); 512k and 384k are totally uncapped over weekends. Those are different packages tho.

K3NS31 - If you don't mind me asking your advice. I'm currently (please don't be shocked everyone) living with a vodacom 3g 500mb. Contract expiring in August, eventually...

My mind has pretty much been made up regarding MWEB (uncapped) until you made your last statement regarding Cybersmart.

Now, I have no intention on staying below 1gb once I have ADSL. I don't have the desire to d/l weekdays and can wait for weekends to download (especially since I'm looking at 384 or 512 and you say this is uncapped - is THIS unshaped like with your 4mb account that IS capped (divided by 10) but UNshaped?)

I'm trying to understand what I will be paying to weigh up my options. I have a physical phone line, but it's not at all connected. Can you assist me with what I will end up paying Cybersmart & Telkom (for the line).

Then, I have a feeling you may be biased (considering you are with Cybersmart), but please, honestly, what do you think I should go for (package)? And which ISP?

I would just like to say that I have been using MWEB all month with no issues whatsoever. Torrents have performed admirably, videos stream on demand all hours of the day (youtube, vimeo, game trailers, apple traillers). Browsing is 100%.

The caps or fair usage thresholds on uncapped connection should be :

384kbps -> 122GB
512kbps -> 163GB
1mbps -> 326GB
4mbps -> 1.3TB

Oh come on! You can't be serious. Who in his right mind can consider that 1.3TB is fair usage and think that it could be sustainable!

As far as I know, the 384 and 512 accounts are also supposed to be unshaped. I haven't actually used either one yet, but will prob be downgrading soon :(
Note tho, with these accounts you must move your line to CS. That said, they are cheaper than Telkom on line rental and Laurie's posted in another thread to say u can keep your line with them (at the lower prices) even if you move away later.

I honestly don't know how much of a speed difference you'll see on the lower line speeds between mweb and CS, considering the lines are so slow anyway. And from what I've been reading, Mweb's still getting decent performance on their uncapped accounts, so they're probably not at capacity yet.
At the end of the day the CS options work out cheaper for me, but with less bandwidth, usually enough for my needs tho, and good speeds pretty much guaranteed. Hence I'm staying with them. Especially since it's still early days for Mweb et al. (although we all know how Afri are suffering).
So to answer your question, my gut says if you want to download a LOT, go for Mweb, they look like they'll be fast for a while yet and don't seem to be applying usage policies so far.
If you want constant performance / speed on a tight budget and with a reasonable "cap", go for Cybersmart.

You'll have to check out their websites for pricing info - I'm downgrading to the CS "R299 for 384k + uncapped weekends + 10GB during the weeks" package next month, probably. REALLY gonna miss my 4Mb line. 25 minutes to pull a 1 hour TV show was NICE.

Why not ? If you run it 24/7 for a month maxed out that is what you get. It is what you pay for so I consider it to be the fair usage threshold.

Anything less than 1.3TB and you being unfair to yourself and the abilities of your connection.

Wow, I download just over 120G-220G on a 4Mb line and I thought I was a heavy user.
Small business, Normal surfing and email during the day. Direct downloads (no torrents) at night when the internet is quiet). SOmetimes I have downloaded 7G-9G overnight. Even if I downloaded 10G thats still 300G per month plus the daytime usage (more online)

I have always thought that Fair Usage cannot be a total per month.
Logically a persons daytime usage and nighttime/week-end usage needs to be separated.

If they differentiated it would drive people away from unnecessary downloads during the day to the nighttime thus spreading the load.

Just like they should do with electricity billing.

If you did 120~220GB on a 4MB line then you could actually just use a 512kbps since that gives you 163GB.

Why by something if you are not going to us it? Why buy a 2L Coke if you are only going to drink 330ml ?

But I do use it

I have 5 online business users running Web Based Apps and sending and receiving email.
Its the kind of business where turnaround time is important. Throughput often peaks at around 3M. Then there is the online apps.
Cutting back on bandwidth would slow the users down.

I would also not be able to get my overnight downloads down in the timeframe (10m-6am)

There is more to bandwidth than usage. Speed is also important.
If I buy 2l of beer I want to be able to chug it and not drink it through a straw.

And the cost difference is inconsequential in the business
