ADSL Up and Down like a Yo-Yo

I'm sick of ISP's promising the world; but once you have given them your line and money it is downhill all the way...

Back to Telkom it seems.
 
We had a client today who was experiencing this only recently.
From what we can tell, only recently were they upgraded to 10MB, then we went on site, called Tellies and got them to sync it at 8MB, then it was unstable, all the way down to 4MB (same story) and then we left it on 2MB and it was stable... FINALLY!

Hmm, either the line is faulty, or the DSLAM is oversubscribed (too much interference) or the router took a turn for the worst.

gdiza: could you post your client's router info: router brand/model, sync rates, SNR margins and line attenuation.
 
Line downgraded from 10Meg now to 5Meg:

Zyxel:

noise margin downstream: 17 db
attenuation downstream: 40 db

Telkom Marconi:

noise margin downstream: 20 db
attenuation downstream: 35 db

D-link:

noise margin downstream: 16 db
attenuation downstream: 43 db

Billion:

noise margin downstream: 14 db
attenuation downstream: 44 db


So now i am using the Telkom Marconi, but still on the 5Meg line ;/ Looks like i wont be able to go higher then it will drop again, according to those stats it must stay online now, and the Telkom guy told me this area here in Parow is copper still + i am 3KM away from the exchange so i can forget about 10MB line now without getting disconnected.

You are lucky to even be achieving a 5mbps rate at that distance!

Hi all. I am a complete noob, however, I am having the same issues that started this thread, and was hoping someone could help decipher my DSL results from my ZOOM X7 Modem. It sounds like perhaps my carrier trying to send me 10MB and the line not being able to handle it was the cause of other peoples problems here. Should I get my carrier to throttle me down and keep trying to get a stable connection?

I'm also experiencing the same issue since Wednesday passed. I had a 1mb line which was terribly unstable. Even lowering it to 384k made no difference.

I cancelled the line and Telkom installed a new one. My line was unexpectedly stable. Upgraded to 2mb two weeks ago with no issues whatsoever. My line stats were still terrible ( att dwn and up was 63 and 31 respectively and snr up and dwn 9 and 7). I know that everyone is going to say my line stats is too bad even for 1mb but it was working 100% and syncing at 2048.

Since Wednesday it can't sync longer than 5 seconds then drops the connection. Nothing has changed with my setup. The modem is nowhere close to anything electrical which can interfere with the signal. My dwn snr keeps fluctuating between 0 and 7 then drops the connection. Logged a call with telkom so now the wait continues. It would really suck to downgrade but weird enough my line was more stable on 2mb than 1mb or 384.
