ADSL VS DIGINET For Webhosting

Hi

Can anyone give me any reasons why ADSL 1024 would be better than a diginet line for webhosting, and what Diginet would be better for webhosting
Website will be Java and Graphic intense, both the user and server will be sending high amounts of graphics.

To me it's about data availability. With ADSL, they don't guarantee up time on the line. And you do only get 256kbps up. So effectively a 256kbps Diginet line equates to a ADSL 1024. (apart from the obvious download difference). Then there's the shaping to contend with, and contention ratios at the exchange, and the fact that Telkom do not guarantee bandwidth or availability on ADSL. Diginet you enter into an SLA, for say no more than 14Hours a month downtime, else they cough up.

So if your website is gonna host a lot of content, and needs to always (as in always or business dies) then Diginet. If you just hosting a little site, for say 1000 users doing the odd blog.

I'm just not sold on using ADSL as a hosting service.

Diginet will also cost you an absolute fortune. Why not rather get a server set up at a datacentre?

ADSL is not suitable for hosting.

If you have to do it yourself then diginet is the way to do it but as MaD points out getting it hosted elsewhere is going to be cheaper - especially overseas.

thanks guys you hit the nail on the head for me, as usual we always try to go the cheapest route but sometimes the costs are worth stability,

Thanks graviti, i forgot totaly that telkom adsl has no gaurentees, and the issue of contention ratios at the exchange.

So diginet is our only option, data center isnt an option as management feel if we cant do it our selves we shouldnt be doing it. (and if they discover they can outsource most of there needs, i'll be out of a job hehehe)

Well you can still do it yourselfs by hosting your own server in the datacenters - you are then just paying for security and the internet pipe. Your boss is an idiot if he thinks otherwise

Yea, this is what we're doing at work. Have a server hosted in the Internet Solutions server room in Rosebank. We manage it ourselves, they just provide space, bandwidth, security, backups, etc. We have to provide our own software, licenses, all that stuff. We have ADSL at work which we use to connect to the server to work on it. The server is always available, even when the ADSL goes down, speeds are awesome, and it works out a damn side cheaper than hosting it ourselves.
