Home sweet home :)
a while back there was a argument about diginet not being such a bad "alternative" to adsl as telkom has dropped its prices on it considerably. now i just want to ask what this was based on? i was looking around today to see how much they dropped their prices as diginet is a bit more reliable than adsl. my findings...

for a 64k/64k diginet connection you pay about R2000pm. sure this is uncapped but the average business connection will hardly ever use over about 6gb of data per line. This with all telkom fee's included costs about R1000pm. half the price. but the adsl will be a 1024/256 connection compared to a 64/64 connection. so half the price at 16 times the speed with the only negative thing being the adsl will propably be down 1 day every 3 months. not even mentioning benefits you may have with adsl like voip and things like that.

another aspect is the cost of installation. diginet is about R3000 plus you need a pricy router. adsl is about R400 plus a router of about R500 ?

i think/know i'm missing something and invite those who know more about this to tell me what that is. but i really dont see how for any average company adsl is not the best option. maby even adsl with a iburst/3g connection as backup on pay-as-you-use basis?

some people may argue that you get a static ip with diginet, but most isp's these days offer static ip's free of charge so thats not a bonus either anymore...

with diginet, if you pay for 64K, you get 64K.

and as Sunnic said, reliability, no lost packets and no long pings (latency).

ADSL in ZA is not as stable as in other countries. once it does get that stable, i don't think there would be a leased line market.

But really the ADSL here is stable enough for a business just doing emails and web browsing. It diesnt ever get too bad, like unusable, especially not if you go through SAIX.

There will be a bit of downtime and some connection problems or degraded service, but is it even nearly worth it to get Diginet? 64kb isnt nearly enough for a business that puts a few PC's on the same line. So you end up having to pay around R10000pm when you could pay R1000..

We tried applying for ADSL in November 2004 for the office and were told it wasn't available yet. The latest date estimate for DSL is December 2006 in our area.

Telkom say they have no problem supplying us with Diginet anytime we want it though. We've gone iburst in the meantime.

exactly. we run our whole WAN over adsl. we never have problems. the adsl goes down about once every 3 months for about 4 hours. for that time we have a iburst connection which cost R179pm as a backup. the adsl is just as reliable as the diginet.

on the comment about "with diginet you get64k if you pay for 64k". my adsl lines is never "slower" than what it should be. and even if for some reason your line speed drops, it must drop a hell of a way from 1024k to get to 64k hey? only wireless connections the speed vary a lot, on adsl you pretty much get what you pay for..

In our experience, 64k Diginet for emails just doesn't cut it anymore.

Keep in mind that my company also does a lot of overseas contracts, and hence the need for a fatter pipe as tender documents get emailed often... and these are 20Mb or so in size....

Now... several 20Mb emails coming in and going out on a 64k Diginet line WILL choke that line to the point of uselessness... sure, they'll come through, but it'll take a long, long, long while.

We've decided to replace our current 64k Diginet with a 512k uncapped ADSL static IP line, but will run both in parallel before we will terminate the Diginet line.

So, in a word, Diginet is outdated and ancient, and cannot handle modern mail traffic anymore.

But for those that are willing to pay, and those who wants a reliable service, then go for Diginet, but beware - there are lots of hidden costs not usually mentioned.

Search for threads regarding Diginet discussions on this forum, on one is a discussion regarding the extra costs of Diginet.

One such thread is here.

exactly. if you really want a diginet and want to be happy with it you need like a 256k diginet at least. and for the you can at the same price have about 10 drivers on standby to go and collect the files you need transfered every 30 minutes :)

I've been monitoring our ADSL line for a month prior to switching over, and it's stable.

Except for the 12-hourly resets Telkom enforces...

If Telkom is your ISP, anything less than 24hr is ISP set. Speaking of which i must contact cybersmart and ask em to set mine back to 24hrs.(if possible since it might be a mass automated process)
