Hi guys, I have a marconi telkom adsl wireless router which is connected in the house and i stay in the cottage and i link up with it wirelessly with my pc, the internet works fine and all but i've noticed something , the connection drops for a second or two like every 30 seconds or so, problem is this causes lag for online games, is this a problem with the router or is this standard for wireless routers ?

If this is normal, I'll just buy another router and run the connection wired but i dont know if its possible to connect 2 routers 1 adsl line since i have an extension for the line

That is definitely no normal but then I suspect the wireless solution in the Marconi is garbage.

I would suggest using a Netgear DG834GT ADSL router which uses an Atheros wireless chip which is one of the better ones ... it will cost you $$$ but it is cheap compared to the frustration of dealing with crappy wireless.

Another option is buying a very decent wireless access point and plugging that into the marconi and disabling wireless on the marconi.

Although I can't speak for all netgear I bought a prosafe WG302 at R2500, connectivity is good (probably thanks to the chipset which is a plug in MiniPCI module not made by netgear) firmware is total crud, since day one I couldn't get the thing allow transparent DHCP. eventually I had to downgrade to the oldest firmware I could find to get it too work.

As you can see I'm not a big netgear fan, but I agree the Marconi's probably a lot worse, you should consider an AP, that way you keep the AP as you upgrade routers in future (ADSL 2+, Metronet) you get the idea.

My personal favourite is 3com, where you can get a/b/g for R1000 to R1400, Also try for a 802.11a wireless AP as there is very little interference on the 5GHz spectrum, allbeit with a significant reduction in range.

On the router configuration settings under WAN, tick the box at the bottom for "automatic reconnection", apply/save, save and reboot.

Please reply to this post if it works. Seems that there are loads of people with this problem. Telkom don't have/give the answer.

k thanx i'll try soon as i get home, and about my other question is it possible to connect 2 routers to 1 adsl line if u have an extension for the line ?

Telkom say not, although I havenot tried it. If you want to share a line with two different accounts use "bridged mode". See discussion elsewhere on this forum.

You cant connect 2 routers onto one line, not possible. Bridge mode is the best alternative. Wireless gaming just wont work no matter how much u try to configure nething, its all in the signalling and with gaming u cant have an intermittant signal, you need a stable one. Concerning you intermittant connectivity, it depends on whether you signal is the one losing connection or your actual router... if its your router there could be an intermittant fault on the line that causes the loss of connection, get some1 at Telkom to test your line, there could also be a prob with the Router itself...

Oh.. Reading back over that. Which connection is droppping? The wireless or the ADSL? No use changing the WAN settings if it is the wireless connection that is dropping!

Something I forgot to mention, NB!! check the drivers for your wireless lan card on the laptop/pc, sometimes they're outdated and give a lot of grief!

Had a similar problem with an IBM a while back with the intel 2200bg, problem got solved with dozens of driver updates.

no the wireless connection from my pc drops like every minute or so but just for a sec, so u guys say you cant game with a wireless connection ?

Yeah, i think and am not 2 sure as i havent actually tried it myself, but from what i know regardless of whether its Sentech, iburst, the likes, or a fixed adsl line with a wireless router with a wireless connection, it wont work. because wireless signalling is not always constant. Games require the constant bitrate.

It sounds like the wireless signal is not very strong from the cottage to the house. ping the ADSL router for a long time and see if there is any packet loss
there should not be any.

I'm not a gamer so i cant say for sure but technically you can game on a wireless connection as long as it is a good wireless connect. a wireless LAN connection should not add more then 5ms. it should avg. 2-3ms assuming there is no load on the wireless link eg copying files while gaming ;)

k i fixed the problem, under wan settings theres another section called ppp disconnect timer config, it was disconnect every time outbound data was trying to come in, i'm now not getting any packet loss and i have a 2ms ping to the router and its working fine for gaming
