I currently have a D-Link G604T and want to upgrade to a better one anyone with recommendations. I was told netgear, which model?

The Netgear 834GT is a very nice router.
Wireless, 4xLAN, decent firewall and so on. Costs around R1100.

A nice feature to have is failover to 3G HSDPA, for those occasions when ADSL won't work. It happened last week with the thunderstorms - I was out for a few hours on ADSL until Telkom reset our DSLAM. No complaints about their service, but it was very useful to failover to 3G for the duration.

The Billion 7402 routers support this feature, and I think a couple of others do so as well.

Can you still get the netgear d834gt? I have quotes for a netgear wndr3300. Any comments on that?

Can anybody help ?

I have a Billion 7300 RA Router and this replaced the old Telkom router.

The main difference between the two is that the old router only connected to the net if so required by a computer on the LAN and user name and password was supplied by this computer, however the Billion 7300 connects after booting and remains connected for the whole day until you power down.

Is there a setting that I can change to facilitate a disconnection from the net after use until such time as the net is required again by a computer on the LAN ?

Log into the router and select bridge mode. APPLY --> Save config

Then you can "dial" the connection from your PC.

Your old Telkom router was actually an ADSL modem.
You used to connect to the internet by initiating the dial-up connection from your computer.

You can achieve this with the new ADSL router by switching it to BRIDGE-ONLY mode, and dialing in from your computer again.

Thanks guys,

You are really quick ! Using ADSL I guess !!!!

Just some further info......there are about a zilloin options. Just point me in the right direction ?

Do I still have to configure the "Default gateway" and the "Preferred DNS Server" on the various PC's ? or must I delete these as per the old TELKOM modem ?

I must be stoopid !

I cannot find any option with a "bridge" or "Bridge-only" possibility

Further, assuming I do get this setting right...........must I now do a "Broadband" connection again on each machine with the u/n and p/w like it used to be with old modem ?

Thanks guys !

Ok ! I have found the setting under: "WAN, Wan Profile, Protocol.
The other questions however I am still not sure of.

You're doing pretty well mister monologue.

You will have to do a dial up connection on each machine yes.

The router is still a router and can still act as the default gateway so leave the current settings. When the dial-up connection is initiated, windoze will redirect all traffic throght the dial-up connection anyway. If you want to dial-up and see the other computers on the network at the same time, then there is something you have to do on each machine depending on the version of windoze you are using.

Note: I am not sure which connection you are referring to when you mentioned the default gateway and preferred DNS server settings.
Is it the Dial-Up-Internet connection or the LAN Connection you're talking about?

Thanks for the compliment but I like talking to myself seeing nobody else wants to !
These things tend to happen when you get my age.

The default gateway and preferred Dns is in the LAN connection.
Using XP Home
