Hi

I have put together a server that allows you to access the internet with no cap. The server is a socks proxy. The service is a 256k proxy for 299.00pm

Visit: http://www.nocap.co.za

The service will be starting on the 14/11/2003 sooner depending on the response. So the more that join the sooner i will put it all up.

I have tested it with ADSL and these are the only clients i will be taking on, and it works great allowing you to surf, download and do just about anything you want to do with NOCAP.

The site is basic and straight forward, because i know your interested only in the service.

thanx
Jason

How many simultanious logins to proxy are allowed?

Sorry to be the party-pooper here, but this had me thinking.

I'm not trying to be nasty to the post originator, but need to figure out something.

We all moan that Telkom rips us off charging us R230 for ISP fees and then limit us to 3Gb. Telkom say (International) bandwidth is expensive and we say (we think) it is not that expensive.

Now here we have an offer for R299 for the same service that we expected of Telkom in the first place, just at a higher price.

In my humble opinion, this proof one of two things to us:
1) Bandwidth is really expensive, hence the High price for this product (I mean, this price must be based on some average use, say 6Gb).
2) Greedy parties now comes to the party and see they can share in some of the cream that Telkom is helping themselves to.

Please tell me I'm wrong, I'm rather confused.

Credit to the nocap ppl though. However I do agree with you that this service should be provided by telkom in the first place.

I still feel that R299 for just a local proxy is a bit steep. Yet, I dont know what the international bandwidth price is? Still, if nocap could answer a few questions such as:

Is this per user?
What kind of SLA has been drawn up?
Web hosting? (Static IP addresses?)

Good idea though. If one has popped up more will pop up in the future... Just goota wait for one of the big companies to set one up for us. Anyone out there listening. Proxy service for R50 p/m. If you get 1000 users that is an easy R50,000 additional revenue. Maybe even make a deal to include it in a hyped up ADSL Account?

Any ideas?

Hi kreno,

I'm also a bit confused. Does this mean nocap would be my ISP, or would I need a nocap subscription in addition to my ISP subscription?

Also, can you tell us what brand of USB modem you are selling?

I have to stream realtime data from the USA stock market.
How would your service provide me with more bandwidth than
3G?

I hate to break this to you all, but if you are still under the assumption that bandwidth is cheap, you should really open your eyes. Local bandwidth is "dirt cheap". International bandwidth however, is not. I think it was last year there was a ****storm thrown up by one of our ministers about how the US ISP's should provide "cheap" bandwidth to the African continent. What people fail to realise is that those ISP’s are businesses who need to make a profit like anyone else. To run a piece of cable across the ocean and then provide a certain level of service, is not a cheap endeavour. The likes of UUNET, Telia,, AT&T, Teleglobe etc are not charities. We are paying for the luxury of accessing resources in the US/Europe. At the moment its not even a give and take scenario. It’s purely take! take! take! I honestly don’t believe the world would be any worse off if the African continent - let alone South Africa - were disconnected from the global internet community. In fact it might benefit them even more! There would be a huge decrease in 419 scams. Those people who do make a difference, and do put Africa on the “internet map” are few and far between, and unfortunately do not justify the charity that we are demanding.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Telkom are not to blame. Telkom are definitely to blame for a lot of the problems. But please remember that UUNET, IS, Sentech are first-tier ISP’s. They have to pay their “big brothers” in the US/Europe. When you pay your R45 000/month for your 256k CIR, you’re not paying that to Telkom. You’re paying that to your ISP.

I too wish for the day that I can get oodles of bandwidth to my bedroom. I also agree with what Pumba stated. What we have now is companies trying to jump onto the Telkom bandwagon and make a profit off their Draconian pricing schemes. Good on the unnamed companies for having that entrepreneurial spirit, but I wouldn’t use them just on principle. It’s like telling Telkom that we are willing to put up with their shocking service.

Celery: What are you on about??!!

Bandwidth isnt unaffordable in SA to me. R300 for 3 gb is not to bad. Telkom is more than willing to give you an extra 3 gb for around that price and I am sure they wouldnt give 3gb of bandwidth away at a loss.

So them claiming that bandwidth costs are high is BULL. They charge R680 for the Copper line from you to the exchange(home users), and R800 for the copper line from your business to their exchange. I have been saying this since I joined this forum. ADSL would be affordable to alot more people, guys could buy 12 gb of bandwidth if they wanted, BUT ONLY IF TELKOM WOULD STOP BEING SO BLOODY RIDICULOUS and STOP CHARGING EXHORBITANT RATES FOR A BLINKING COPPER LINE BETWEEN YOU AND THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi

Here are the answers you are looking for.
1. 256k in total bandwidth
2. 100-150 similtaneous connections
3. R38 494.80pm for 256Local/256Int leased line from SAIX
4. No Static IP (as of yet)
5. No Web Hosting.
6. Still have to use your ISP Username & Password.
7. The USB Modem I sell is D-Link
8. Once your 3gig cap is reached you can use this proxy to keep surfing.

Ok. The response has been very good and i want to thank every one for there comments.
My whole idea here was to supply a service that users can use to keep surfing at decent speeds and at a good price. The VPN services available from other companies are charging over R700 for there 256k service. As VPN this proxy is a shared service. I have major upgrade ideas for the future, like adding a second server as soon as i hit 100 subscribers. This i belive will be good for every one as you will have the choice between two servers. I know it sounds expensive but if i drop the price i will have to put more people to the server which will slow it down, and i dont want a service that is slow. I am very open to suggestions and i want to make this a service that i would use if some one else was offering it.
What maby i can include is a free test run for 2 days and you can then join if your happy. just a suggestion. Also if the response is very good over 300 people then of course i can also adjust the price for everyone. I dont want to milk everyone for what they are worth. As this is a business i want to make a profit but at a reasonable price.

Thanx
Jason

Chubbs,

You actually have no idea how expensive international bandwidth is, do you ?

If I understand you correctly, you have a 256k leased line. Now if you have 100 users on at the same time, does that mean that each user gets 2.56k?

Hi

If 100 users are connected at the same time then you will get 2.56, but that is saying that evry single user is pulling info constantly and at maximum throughput. Which seldomly happens. And at different times there definatley wont be max users online. So although theoretically you get 2.56, but in sctual fact you get more taking into consideration the usage of users. For those big downloads 100mb and up do them at night when fewer users are online and you should get very good bandwidth, during the day you should also get good bandwidth as not everyone is downloading constantly. What every body must remember this is a proxy server so there are many things that influence your bandwidth. I have taken note of what is going on with the other guys and there are 64k to 256k options available, this is a 256k option at a little bit more than a 64k option.
A small note, the server is a cached server so the bandwidth usage is cut down as most browsed info is cached. The cache is large so I expect this to help to as it wont have to do the downloading from int. sites every request.

Thanx

Hi

Just to clarify something, this service is basically the same as a VPN service. The VPN service offered by other companies are also shared services, so when they offer a 64k vpn solution it is a 64k line shared by other users, so depending on user usage it will influence your service greatly. I have used vpn solutions and have found them slow and mostly unreliable, What i want to do is offer a better service at a better price.

All ways you look at this service its a good service.
And to prove it i request that 20 people email me and i will give you a FREE user name and password to test this service before the 14 and those users can report what they think.
If the service warrants a change i will change it to improve it.

email : [email protected]

Thanx
Jason

In all honesty, I would like someone who users this service to let me know how it is. I know for a fact that 100 users on this connection will kill it. With my ADSL heaving browsing hours 7pm - 11pm, my proxy takes a know even on local servers.

And those users that are willing to pay for an uncapped connection are going to use it at fill tilt as much as they can. I know I certainly would...

Have you guys drawn up any SLA's yet?

Hi

Thanx for the response to my challenge so far, we still have some space left for more testers so feel free to drop me an email.
Neobyte, No official SLA has been drawn up but i can tell you that the server will be monitored continualy and maintained. I suspect if anything should ever go wrong with the server, we would respond within 2-4 yours but most of the time much sooner.

For all testers the server will be running this weekend.

Thanx

Hi

I have given it some thought and to improve the system i am going to include a 2nd option and improve the first one.

256k Service 50/1 ratio R299pm
256k Service 100/1 ratio R99.00

Both options will come with a 4 day free test on new accounts.
This will improve performance for option 1 and create a cheaper service but still with good bandwidth for option 2.
So i will set up 2 servers and go from there.

Please drop me an email if your interested in this service and what option you would go for.
The Latency for the server is between 25-50ms pinging the saix backbone.

Thanx

I forgot who was saying here that international bandwidth was expensive , please tell us how much it is per gig and were u got that data from couse i am shure we getting ripped off i mean why in Australia they can have the same connection for R150 and unlimited downloading , and i mean they also are far away from everybody , and also have to lay out 1000's of KM of cables under water even more then us , i wana see why its cheap for them and expensive for us , what makes them speshill , i think this just prooves we getting ripped of so far and untill some competion comes nothing will change.

I will use the service to pull financial data of a server.
I need a refresh every minute and therefore caching will not
help me?
