Hi, apologies for this long post, but I'm looking for some information and advice on how to proceed with my DSL subscription.

I've got a 4Mb DSL line, which was upgraded from a 2Mb line about 2-3 months ago. The speeds I've been getting are somewhere between 0.3Mb and 1.3Mb. I can't even you-tube on the low res videos - also, it's actually too slow to maintain a connection to the minecraft server I play on.

I've been doing some research, here's the broadband stats on my exchange: http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/RKVN
But, according to Telkom's ADSL Checker, it says my max speed is 1Mb
My SNR margins are good (well over 10).

So first question is: What does 1Mb actually mean (i.e why), and why does the line sync at 4Mb, and why they then sell me 4Mb DSL when that is the case?

Also - after consulting with my ISP, we ran some test accounts which seemed to indicate that the speed problem is on the telkom side (I guess as above). But as per recommendation, I also logged a fault with Telkom and asked them to please check why my speed isn't great.

The technician came and had a look and said everything on the line is fine, so naturally I asked him why it's slow then, and what I can do about it. He said something about they're upgrading the boxes to fibre in the next month or so and that maybe it would help.

So second question is: Does anyone know what "upgrading to fibre in the next month" actually means? Will upgrading the boxes to be fibre linked give me a faster connection?

Many thanks for any advice or info. Moving forward I'm hoping to work out whether I should just downgrade and wait, or look for other options.

You're likely on a congested exchange...hence Telkom planning to upgrade it to fiber.

Post a tracert to mybroadband.co.za and maybe a ping -n 50. Google for step by step guide

You're talking to the wrong side of Telkom at the moment. You need to speak to the guys on Exchange and Network operations.

PM TelkomZA on the forum, they helped me with the same sought of problem more than once.

Hey Man,

Please would you run the second tool in my sig ("Is it my line") :)

Basically - there are two basic parts to ADSL... namely "Line" and "ISP Account"

The speed of your "Line" is the maximum possible speed that your ADSL can reach (well, its more complicated than this, however that's the gist of it), while the speed of your "ISP Account" can range from 1Mbps to 40Mbps and is the "Internet" part of ADSL.

However, lets say you have a 4Mbps ISP Account, and a 2Mbps Line, your maximum speed will be 2Mbps - and visa versa.

You always take the lowest of the two as your highest possible speed :) Basically, when they upgrade your exchange to fibre, they are making the possible Line Speed higher :) As soon as your line speed is higher, you can use a faster ISP Account etc etc...

Hope this makes sense :D If not, I will try re-explain (Im quite tired at the moment so this probably makes no sense :P)

Aah, I see shard already answered :) (Shouldve read first).

Thanks for the replies. Currently in discussions with TelkomZA to find out what is happening. Will let people know in case anyone in the same area has the same problem.
