The following is an email excerpt from the SNO regarding my enquiry into their plans with broadband, in particular ADSL2+

Dear ****,

Thank you for your interest in the SNO. We are considering & planning the deployment cutting edge technologies, including Metro Ethernet and ADSL 2+, through an extensive IP based next generation network to meet broadband requirements of various customer segments in South Africa. The experience & expertise of the Tata Group (the strategic equity partner in the SNO) in various countries, including India, have pointed out to us the benefits of technologies such as those mentioned by you.

Dear SNO,

Your website states- "ISPs will soon have the choice of connecting their networks using state-of-the-art technology deployed by the SNO across South Africa"

I would like to know if that means you plan to seize the opportunity of investing in the installation DSLAMS capable of providing ADSL2+ ? (up to 24Mbps download speed)

I'm sure you are aware this is this benchmark ADSL technology at present in other parts of the world.

If this is not going to be the case, could you explain why?

If it is the case, that would be fantastic news and I applaud you for taking a huge step in closing our digital divide!

Mmm R700 for a 1024 line. Im sure 24mbit will be lank affordable. Only the price of a ferrari payment per month

Well actually if the SNO has DSLAMs capable of 24mbit and Telkom doesnt then they can charge less then Telkom does without fear of a retaliatory price war from telkom as telkom wont be able to offer the same profit. Viva la revolution.
 
Lets be optimistic..we're dealing with the SNO here and anyhting besides telkom is a step up. Lets hope they keep price down and quality up
 
I'll still be cautiously optimistic about that - seeing 24mbps anytime soon is hardly likely...and anyway you need to be in a certain distance from the exchange (500m? 1KM?) so only selected individuals will have it.

Nevertheless it's positive they actually are considering ADSL 2+
 
Yes thats right, the new duopoly comes in, and then all of a sudden we get 24mbit DSL at cheap prices. Wake up please! Everyone is pinning their hopes on this SNO like its going to change everything.

This is only going to introduce a duopoly in South Africa. The SNO has even said on myadsl news that they do not want to start a price war with Telkom.

It has been said 100 times. The ONLY WAY to have truly competitive prices and fast broadband is to open the market up completely to ANY COMPANY wanting to operate as a telecoms provider in South Africa.

The only thing the duopoly will accomplish, is atleast give us a choice of who gets to rip us off every month.

I predict that prices might fall maybe 10%, but things staying the same overall.

ADSL2 and 24mbit connection speeds, will DEF NOT be available or even close to affordable for the home user for years to come.

They might roll out ADSL2 for businesses, and charge the same ridiculous amount as Telkom's charges for its diginet lines.

If ICASA's regulations come in to play, allowing a competitive and fair market, we should find ADSL2+ only being marginally more (10-20%) expensive than redundant options, this is generally the case in Asia, Australia and the UK.

hmm "redundant" has a nice ring to it :)

Yes there is a loop length issue, the further away you are the less bandwith you get, at 3km = 8Mbit , still not bad. Actually ADSL2+ has far greater loop length than standard ADSL, albeit at 10km's you will likely only get 1Mbit.

I think a solution to this is to bring localised hubs via Fibre optics into neighbourhoods. therefore shortening the loop length. This might be the Metro-Ethernet technology they mention. Correct me if I'm wrong.

i dont see any changes

the sno has TATA as one of the shareholders i heard and if anything just look as the junk **** quality cars that TATA is manufacturing and selling in south africa if thats the quality they supply then i think this sno's service is gonna stink not much difference from telkom both are assholes riding in the same boat and as usual you and i the consumer will have to pay the price :confused:
 
You can't judge them by their car division...plus the head guy of the sno has like 20 years of experience in the telecoms industry so you'd expect better service from them...as everyone here says...be cautiously optimistic about the sno
