Heck guys I dunnow. If one looks at what happened with all other departments and services when competition was introduced, not much changed anyway.
Sure the arrival of the SNO will instigate improvements from Telkom but I'm not so sure about the reduction in telecom costs.
Look at our local Cell companies. There are a total of three, yet pricing has basically increased gradually over the years instead of coming down. Where VodaCom, for example, offers cheap MMS rates, MTN may offer cheaper GPRS rates, with CellC giving you lekke cheap calls to 7 buddies. At the end of the day, all 3 have almost similar tariffs when you calculate everything together.
Yes, having 3 competitors helps when it comes to introducing new technologies HSDPA and keeping up with international trends, yet connecting to the Net with your cell phone is way more expensive than in Europe, for example.
Aren't we being pulled wool over the eyes with promised of reduced fixed line telecom costs when all we're steering to is a similar situation like we have with the Cell companies?

The first day the SNO offers an ADSL product, I dont care how much it is. I will personally walk into my local Telkom shop and hand in my cancellation of service and while they are entering it into their computer I will be doing a dance of joy and singing at the top of my voice.
Maybe someone with more skill than me can suggest some lyrics. I can always play a song on my cell phone while I dance.

dont hold your breath, Gov have 30% share in SNO.... the gonna regulate pricing alright, oh about R100 cheaper with a cap.....
Mark my words.... after Carte Blanche I dont think SNO is our knight in shining armour.... more like a wolf in sheeps clothing... If gov is invloved they will regulate as they see fit and make sure they rake in a couple of Billion profit.....

Let's hope they will! But a lot of rules will still have to change before that becomes a possibility! The gubberment only now allowes for a second operator, but the market is still closed!

Actually, it's entirely up to gubberment! And their pockets are more important than the good of the country, thus, unfortunately, my initial reaction might be right...

What would be nice is if SNO is the sleeping giant and suddenly starts off offering cheaper and hugely increased BROADBAND speeds. Something like a blitzkrieg (sp?) would be nice. Completely crippling Telkom from the word go.
We'll see. Anything must be better than Telkom. SNO is actually in a sticky situation (good for us). Realistically most people are expecting them to offer similar pricing to Telkom. The problem is that if they do so, and offer similar pricing to Telkom, then it will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that ONLY an OPEN MARKET will bring down the telecoms pricing. It will be a serious nail in DoCs coffin of "bright ideas", other than following established global trends.
