Hi guys I need some advise here. I am having some problems with reliable speeds when downloading. Now I have been playing around with the settings on my router and found the following.

When I set the router to connect using G.DMT I get a sync speed of 8192kbps or in that region. And at this point the router shows line attenuation downstream of 30.5db and the noise margin is at 10 to 11.

When I set it to connect using ADSL2+ I get a sync speed of 10014kbps and the line attenuation downstream is still at the 30.5db range but now the noise margin has dropped to about 9.

I am using an 4 meg account so the sync speed won't affect it too much. But what would you guys recommend should I use ADSL2+ or G.DMT, which one will give me the best results.

Is there anything I can do to improve the noise margin however as that seems a bit low or I am wrong. I did try and remove the surge protector from the telephone line which gave me 1 point higher on the noise margin. I also tried a different cable but no real change with that.

Is there anything else I can look into.

I'd use ADSL2+ and call telkom (0800 375 375) and ask them to move you to 8Mbps profile

G.Dmt might give you better SNR margins, but I've seen at my friends' house that G.Dmt didn't want to sync any more.
I'd say that you should just stick to ADSL2+ modulation.

If your ADSL account is only a 4Mbps connection, then I would suggest that you ask Telkom to change your profile to 4Mbps, because that would increase your line's stability dramatically.
Lowering the bandwidth would increase your SNR margin with about 3dB for each 1Mbps decrease.
You might experience loss of ADSL connectivity with SNR margins close to 6dB, seeing that 6dB is the minimum SNR margin required for an ADSL modem to establish a connection, which is why I would suggest that you phone and ask Telkom to decrease your decrease your bandwidth to match your ISP account's speed.
