Hi guys next year I will be attending UCT and staying at res which means I will have very limited internet access. The university does give you 500mb per month for just web surfing but I still want to be able to do some gaming from time to time. So do you think that the latest Cell C offering is right for me, as it seems quite cheap (the 2gb once off option) and fast although I have read that you may have trouble with it disconnecting all the time.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Disconnections happen if your signal sucks, so you may have to move your modem / get a long USB extension cord... but your biggest issue is lag on 3G/HSDPA is going to be too bad for gaming. Otherwise CellC product good. If your res room is in .e.g Marquard :D then your gonna be high up and getting good signal probably.

why not just game over the uct's internet? The TENET that provides universities is some of the fastest net in the country! Stellenbosch university has ~1 Gbps bandwidth (600Mbps international) and its quite cheap!! Gettin Cell C will be a waste of money!!

Damn you're lucky enough that you get free internet, nothing like that at stellenbosch!!!

If it works in your area then get it, it's supposed to go over 1Mb/s regularly - no waiting for youtube videos to download etc.

You don't want to get the device if it will disconnect often or can't download properly, then you'll want to return it and that means waiting for about a month to get a refund(subtract a significant handling fee).
Look at hellopeter complaints, you'll get an idea of what to expect if it is not working as advertised.
I'm still waiting for my refund and I was told that they will decide if they refund me, but I'll have to give more info about that when it happens ( i pad prepaid for the r1499 package)

OK i am clearly not familiar with UCT's IT! AND i thought stellenbosch was behind the times but OMS UCT, its almost 2011 and your IT department is more complicated than our own goverment....! I honestly don't understand how a university can not allow you to use exactly how much internet you want in a month! Looks like you might have to go for the Cell C offering after all, but get the 5 gig! 2 gigs does not last very long at HSDPA speeds...

UCT does allow you to use how much you want... when you're a postgrad :)

Gaming on cell is perfectly fine

Granted i dont do twitch games (yet to try quake live on this connection) but racing, rpg and strategy is exactly the same if not better than i had on telkom ADSL 384
I am also on the 2 gig package- and so long as you stay off youtube and similar sites (Damn the release of cata this month :/ - 2gigs will last you just fine
(turning off p2p in trackmania will also save you quite a few MB)
And on the odd night that you do get disconnections - go party or study ^^

That is uncalled for. Rhodes allows about 60MB a day more or less, and downloads only count about 0.05 after 1am. Pure bliss.

Foxtrot, not highjacking just commenting ;) Stellenbosch tarriffs need to be readjusted. Currently its 30c/Mb 8am-5pm, 10c/Mb 5pm-12am and 1c/mb 12am-8am (weekdays), Saturdays 8am-5pm 10c/Mb (rest of day 1c/mb) and Sunday 1c/Mb all day. The peak rate during the week is waaaaaaaaaaay too high i.m.o and i think it should be closer to 15c/Mb and off peak 5c/Mb and off-off peak should stay 1c/Mb. Considering that we connect to TENET I do not know what the cost price of data is to the university but I am sure R10 per gig :D :D (off-off peak) is close to the cost price of ADSL data.

ANYway Foxtrot I max my Vodafone K3565 (3.6 MBps dl) out in Stellenbosch and considering that Stellenbosch falls under Cape Town in Cell C's head I am sure you will get great speeds :)

UP charge R1/MB peak and 50c/MB off-peak

Our tarrifs need to be adjusted :p

Haha, Shame! UKZN gives us 150mb (8am to 6pm) and 1.5GB(6pm to 8am) a day :p

When I was at UKZN (2001-2003) and UCT (2004-2005) there were no limits on data use. Some download websites were blocked but very few. Really made good use of the free net.

FoxTrot, that info you have is incorrect, they recently changed it. Res students now have 900MB per month, and then a separate 500MB for the campus computers. On top of that, you have the internal network for some gaming (WarCraft and CS 1.6). So if you manage yourself properly (unlike I did this year), you should be fine. Scratch that, I'd love a CellC modem :D

haha ok cool, they obviously dont udpate their site that much but I suppose a Cell C modem won't hurt, especially if I bum it off my parents. :)
