I just bought a wireless router and would like to now connect my second pc which is in another room. The laptop picks up the signal just fine from that position.
What is the cheapest (but still a reliable) option for getting my desktop onto the net? I see esquire has a few dongles and controllers, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

Any help would be much appreciated.

USB wireless dongles work well and not too expensive. Get one with an external aerial that Esquire have. The stronger signal the better. It makes it more reliable. Try and position the PC so you don't walk between the PC and the router

Does any dongle work with any router, or do you need to watch out for something?

any dongle should work, I prefer fixed cards though as I have found that dongles don't always pick up signal to the same strength, although I've never used one with an antenna as per chrisc4290

also depending on your usb port configuration a dongle (depending on size) can block access to more than one port
