Hi Guys

Im getting a 4mb adsl line at home and i need some advice regarding the ISP :

Currently checked out Afrihost / web africa / vox telecom and crystal web

What i need is basically the following :

Low enough latency for gaming : Dota 2 / Battlefield 4 / some mmo's etc.
4mb Line is going to be fast enough for what i use it (no uploads/no live streaming etc)
Reliability (will probably go capped unshaped (BECAUSE OF UNSHAPED) in the area of 40+40gb - 50+50gb)
Affordability

Please help guys.

vox bolt on then

50gb in the day
then do what u want in the night

and that 50gb+50gb the other 50gb its usaly past 12:(

with the bolt on its after ours so u get more time to enjoy the internet with out limits

so 50gb+all u can do :)

Sounds good problem being vox telecom charges most for line rental? Much more than afrihost as Vox gives you an option from 4mb - 10mb. Im only able to have 4mb where we stay

So Getting the 50gb option at them with line rental works out at R595, which is almost R140 more expensive than afrihost. Is there other benifits im not seeing?

Lets make it simple and say budget for Isp and Line rental is around R400-R450 and i will be buying my own router cash.

Note that just because it's a shaped account doesn't mean that the reliability will be worse, sometimes it's the other way around as they can shape things like P2P to give gaming or streaming priority when you need it.

I have low and stable latency on my Web Africa capped account and would recommend it for gaming, streaming, browsing etc. I am going to Crystal Web uncapped from July as it sounds like they have a great product offering, but until then I won't be able to comment.

So far web africa does look pretty good... are you using capped or uncapped?

I have a 60 GB + 60 GB capped account and I can't fault it in any way other than torrents are slightly slowed during business hours, but that doesn't bother me at all anyway because of the night data - I schedule my torrents/downloads for those hours :) Everything else has always been full line speed for me day/night

Web Africa is top notch when it comes to capped packages. Their uncapped isn't bad either, I prefer the capped ones though

Guys Regarding the following!! : Do you have to pay telkom to activate your telephone line as an adsl line?? I think i read something regarding this that Telkom sometimes charge you even though it should be a free service : Please help

Our uncapped accounts sound like what you need...

I am already speaking to you guys via email ;) When will you be up and running? And please help regarding the telkom thing (line installation)

We will officially launch on 1 July, but are accepting up to 200 pre-launch customers for the time being.

With regards to your line installation, if you're only going through the process now then select the self install option and verify your installation (after testing with the Telkom guest account details) here - https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/ADSL...2862e.mQfNo2Pzq2Pvq70KaxCLbNiPb0#.U4RR8_mSz14

Telkom guest account details:

Username: guest@telkomadsl
Password: guest

This is the easiest and quickest solution for new installations, and once you are connected to the Telkom guest account you should be able to view the Telkom site, including the verify install page. Thereafter you'll load your ISP details and you should be up and running. If you have troubles, just give us a buzz and we'll help you out.

We however cannot do the initial installation for you - Telkom require this to be in yours or your business' name. It can then be transferred to your ISP of choice. Like, the ISP that assisted you best in this thread, for example. :D

If you have no physical line then if you take one of their "closer' packages on the phone line part by phoning 10210, then you don't pay installation charges for the physical copper install, then do as DJ suggests and do the "self install" adsl application.

I do have a physical telephone line, ok i see. What im trying to understand here : And forgive me !

If i have a physical line and i checked it is capable of handling 4mb, do i need to do anything with anyone from telkom in order to sign up with an Isp or will i handle everything with the Isp, where do you start? What's the first step??

You need to apply for ADSL with Telkom first. There are two players in providing ADSL via fixed lines - Telkom and your ISP. ISPs pay Telkom for access to their network, and ISPs then provision data for you. But you first need the ADSL connection with Telkom.

So your first step is to go to Telkom's site and choose your ADSL package - ensure that you choose line only (don't bundle it with an ISP if you want choice) and be sure not to sign up for a contract of sorts. choose the self install option, and wait to hear back from Telkom for your ADSL activation date. Once this has happened, you will follow the steps I posted earlier to verify the install, then (if you choose Crystal Web), we'll sort you out with a great internet package.

Any other questions just shout...

What happened with me was I applied for my "self install" adsl through the telkom shop, and waited for the "adsl" light on the router to come on, which was just a few days, but can vary greatly due to various factors, so just be patient after applying :)

Then once you have adsl, you can move it to an ISP, but I would make sure it's working hundred's first before moving it, I heard rumours that Telkom treat lines that are with them with more interest than "other ISP" ones. Don't know how true this is.

Who is the upstream provider for Crystal?

SAIX or something else like MTN?
