Hi everyone. Need some advice for my son please. He is finishing his matric and wants to start a few photography courses next year.

As a beginner with no experience, what kind of camera and lense(s) + equipment would you suggest m? Something that he can use to get experience with and maybe make some money part time at weddings, schools and sport events perhaps?

Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks

Best is to start him off with a bridge camera. It might save you some money down the road

What is a bridge camera? Sorry, I'm completely clueless with photography and the equipment.

Are there any specific brands or models you would recommend?

Bridge camera is in between point and shoot cameras and DSLR cameras. Instead of having detachable lenses it has fixed lens with multiple zooms and the ability to change all camera settings manually as with a standard DSLR camera.

The most popular brands for amature photography would be Canon & Nikon, You can the get into the more expensive brands like Pentax etc.

Photography can become a really expensive hobby, like said try and start your son with a bridge camera

I concur, bridge camera is the way to go. I used to work in retail and sell cameras at Tygervalley mall as a teenager over weekends and holidays for 2-3 years and learnt a lot then, but that's yonks ago. Can't remember if it was Panasonic or Samsung that was THE bridge camera back then.

I would highly suggest if you're in the Cape he tries to get a temp/part-time job at Foto First or Orms or such place if they still exist. I never did a photography course but learnt a lot there from people working there for many years as well as from photographers themselves. Bonus is you get to play with the cameras all the time.
